This is quite satisfying and after that quick inning Sale will go at least one if not two more innings. It’s between then and the end of the game that I’d worry about, but the way Sale and the offense have stepped up, the pen has to be ready to get it done too.
Time to see what the pen can do.

I realize Sale was at 93 PC, but still...this bullpen isn't trustworthy. They'd better not blow this.

Between the ump and this hapless bullpen we have no chance. I’ve never seen a more tenuous 3 run lead in a game. I just have no faith any of these guys can get outs other than by luck.

I can’t believe this. Everyone in the stadium is thinking the same. Porcello looked sharp and we know Kimbrel doesn’t do well with men on base or basically anything other than coming in for a clean ninth inning.
I can’t complain about Cora too much with 108 wins, but I think he handles the position players masterfully, yet doesn’t seem to have the right instincts with his relievers.
Kimbrel is going to walk pop this guy up and then give up a 3-run dinger.

I would have gone with Porcello right after Sale. And maybe let him pitch a few innings seeing how sharp he was. But no one asked me, so... iono
Sale was better than the 2 ERs charged to him.
Workman has no business being on the mound except in a mop up role in a blow out game. Unless the Sox are either ahead or behind by double digits, I don't see him again until Spring Training.

Perhaps I will live to regret I suggested this but there was Steven Wright available and we should all know he has had success pitching against the Yankees. True, his knuckler might be off course but he usually handles it well and the Yankees have never had much success against him. We have to consider using him from the bullpen. He could be our missing piece. Good to see Cora used Porcello tonight. He knew he needed this game. Nervous time and the shakes were vibrant but we got that first game we needed. Now we need to see David Price shut his critics down and go out tomorrow and pitch a terrific game and go deep into it as well. Would also be nice to get the jump on the Yankees again too. We would really be in good shape if we could go to New York with a 2-0 lead. Make it happen guys; you can get it done.

Well I didn't watch the game pitch for pitch. I watched the game in segments to keep my insanity and nerves from exploding and, besides, I was going to the bathroom every half hour. Our bullpen must be better than it was tonight and maybe we may have to use some of our starters there. I hate seeing the Meatball ad Jerkman in there. Along with Kelly, they are close to useless. Well, we won and maybe Alex will do a good job tomorrow handling the bullpen with some new people there like Wright and maybe Eovaldi or E-Rod. They can't be any worse than the guys we used tonight.....or can they?

So a win is a win. I heard a stupid question only because of the way it came out, but you guys expressed the same concern properly here - which is can the bullpen be effective. The stupid question was to Barnes I think "can you play like this and win the series?" and I was thinking, where you score more runs than the other team? They won the game, none of these are going to be pretty because the teams are too good.
I think what we see is where both teams need to get to the opposing starter. For the Sox its their best chance to score, for the Yanks it means getting into the Sox pen. Should be interesting to see what happens tonight. The Sox can get to Tanaka and I'd like to see them do that again. The more that bullpen throws the better. Price of course absolutely can't suck like he always has in the postseason. They can't get knocked out of this game early.
Cora needs a better game plan than "pull the effective starter in the 6th inning and throw the worst of your bullpen out there". He needed to have Porcell, E-Rod or Eovaldi ready to go in the sixth. He also seemed slow to get other guys up.
If Wright is hurt that makes no sense as he could have picked other guys up off the roster.
Sox also need to score later in the game, it was concerning they couldn't seem to find some insurance late.
But the good news is we're up 1-0.
