BLUE JAYS V RED SOX
TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5, 2017,7 PM AT FENWAY PARK
TV: NESN, MLBN, (OUT-OF-MARKET ONLY), SNET, MLBN
TORONTO, (64-74)......................................................................................BOSTON, (77-61)
TORONTO:
MARCO ESTRADA, RHP, 7-8, 5.23 ERA, 156K
Marco Estrada had been making progress but took a step back in his
last game. He allowed six runs on 10 hits over five innings. It was the
second time in August he allowed six earned runs; the other starts he
allowed three earned runs or fewer.
BOSTON:
EDUARDO RODRIGUEZ, LHP, 4-5, 4.40 ERA, 118K
The lefty has been able to regain his form since returning from the DL,
going 0-3 with a 5.47 ERA in his last nine starts. Rodriguez is 1-1 with a
4.23 ERA in eight starts at Fenway this season. He is 1-3 with a 6.15 ERA
in his career vs Toronto.
It's Estrada vs. E-Rod as Jays-Sox continues
Quinn Roberts
Nothing has been easy for Red Sox left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez since he came off the disabled list on July 17 after dealing with an injured left knee -- in nine starts he's 0-3 with a 5.47 ERA. He'll try to get that elusive win on Tuesday at Fenway Park against the Blue Jays and right-hander Marco Estrada.
Rodriguez has lost his last two starts, falling to 4-5 overall with a 4.40 ERA. On Thursday against the Yankees, he allowed five runs on 10 hits in five innings.
With the Red Sox holding a 2 1/2-game lead over the Yankees in the American League East, manager John Farrell believes that the key to staying atop the division is consistent starting pitching.
"We know the importance of these games as we get deeper into the season. What we've witnessed and lived is that our guys have been able to separate from poor series and games," Farrell said. "The inconsistencies, I don't think, are a matter of guys pressing or trying to do more. Sometimes we haven't pitched as well to keep a game in check and help our offense get on track. To me that has probably been the biggest key of all."
Although Estrada didn't have his best stuff on Thursday against the Orioles, he picked up his seventh victory of the season. He allowed at least one run during each of the first three innings, and was charged with six runs on 10 hits over five innings.
Estrada has three wins in his last five outings after previously going two months between victories.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME
• After getting the day off on Monday, expect Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia back in the lineup on Tuesday. The club will continue to gradually build him up as he works his way back from inflammation in his left knee.
• In seven career appearances (six starts) against Toronto, Rodriguez is 1-3 with a 6.15 ERA. He faced the Blue Jays in his first start off the DL on July 17, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing three runs on six hits in a no-decision.
• Jose Bautista's 42 career home runs against the Red Sox are the most among active players. His 101 RBIs are third most among active players, behind only Evan Longoria (102) and Robinson Cano (116).

So according to the chicken and beer schedule, expect E-Rod to give up 2 or 3 in the first inning, struggle into the 5th with 100 pitches where Farrell wants to keep him despite being down several runs in case the Sox can score a ton of runs in the 5th to give him the win.

E-Rod is going to find out if he can't go 6 decent innings in a game he'll be toast as a starter. Right now he's terrible.

Someone in the RED SOX structure fell in love with E-ROD, I don't see it myself.... Overrated, constantly underachieving, and comes up with some of the most strange injuries every 3 months + - .....

He did not claim he was unaware. Try reading what you post. Does NOT say anywhere that he was unaware!
QuoteOutfielder Chris Young and Red Sox team trainers were interviewed by the league, according to the report, and the Sox told the investigators that Farrell, nor president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski, nor any front office officials were aware of the sign stealing.

Sorry George, I read more than one source
Three players specifically mentioned: Holt, Pedroia, Young.
He said he was aware of the rule against electronic devices and that is now a league matter. Sounds like admitting guilt to me. "We got caught, so now it's up to the league to deal with it."

Farrell didn't admit to it happening and he didn't deny it. Farrell knows the rule on electronics in the dugout so he didn't say he was unaware of that.
Having said that, Dombrowski and even Girardi don't seem to think it's a big deal.

Thats not what was posted. What was posted by bear is that Farrell was unaware. That was never said by anyone. I'm not saying something was or wasn't done wrong. I'm saying Farrell never said he was unaware of what happened. He didn't admit to it or deny it. Obviously every organization knows that rule.
In any case, this is a game thread. Let's try to keep the sign stealing discussion in the other thread.
Sox finally make it out of the 1st inning without giving up a run.
Didn't make it out the 2nd inning, though.
Hanley took his time to get up and I was hoping he didn't hurt his knee
Here's their chance to bring in some runs.
Blown chance, as usual. 3 runners left stranded.
Mookie, outstanding catch.
Almost looked like last season's Mookie.
Hopefully E-Rod can hold the Jays down while the Sox search for some runs.
Remember what I said about needing 5 hits to score a run....
This is the biggest 1-0 lead ever. Just scratching out a run seems to be eluding them now.
I gave the tickets that I had for tonight's game to my son. Even though he's 30 years old is that still considered child abuse?
Good job by E-Rod tonight. Looked more in control. Now lets find an offense.

Did he come visit you at the home today? LOL.

Let's just say Thanksgiving could be uncomfortable!
Meanwhile, Sox are true to form. But now they're due to load the bases in a show of futility. Maybe it will even start raining and the game gets called.
The other nice thing with this team is they really spread the stink around and Farrrell doesn't change a thing. I think Nunez is the only major league level guy on the roster, and Pedey when he's not hurt. I guess we all have to pretend that Bogaerts isn't hurt and he just sucks and that Betts isn't a snowflake who can't lead his shadow. That Ramirez isn't totally washed up. That JBJ and Beni are anything but nice complementary players.
Now or never, Hanley.
There's one, anyway.
Tied up. Amazing.
Of course they can't close it out. On to extra innings.
Nice job Workman. Let's get a damn run now.
Nice throw by JBJ nails Bautista and saves a run.
XB K's to end the inning and the threat. What. A. Surprise.

Not a surprise the 2 guys before him made outs too.
Yep, making an out seems to be the default result of an At Bat for the Sox these days.
Just like that. 3 up, 3 down.

So he gets a curve ball right over the meat of the plate, no swing. Then he gets a fastball low, middle, no swing. Then finally he gets the pitch he likes apparently and takes a half hearted swing at a ball well outside. It's amazing to watch, but earlier was fun too. That's when Betts walked on 4 pitches and up comes Hacking Hanley. Whiff! There's no pitch that Hanley doesn't like and he pops up the next one in time for Moreland to then dribble the first pitch back to the pitcher. Are these guys watching the game before they come to bat? I expect it could take another 9 innings for them to score again so it's good they have 27 pitchers!
Betts never took the bat off his shoulder for the K.

Betts never took the bat off his shoulder for the K.
And he jerked out of the way on a ball over the plate for the third strike. Does these guys all need glasses?
Enough of this sad nonsense. Time for bed.
Headed to 17 inning, and I, too, am saying good night.
Players from both sides playing like zombies.
We have a Carson Smith sighting.
Nunez with the error at 3rd with a high throw to 1st. 1 out 1 on.
Nice job by Smith. K's Bautista and Leon throws out a runner at 2nd. Bottom 18 coming up. Top of order up.
Yankees lose.
On to the 19th inning.
An 8 pitch top of the 19th for Hector Velazquez. On to the bottom of the 19th.
Sox win in 19 innings. A Betts double and a Hanley single wins it. Hector Velazquez with the win. Bullpen pitched 13 scoreless innings. Plus they pick up a game on the Yankees. 3.5 games up now.
I'm on West Coast time. Taped game and it ran out of space right at the 19th...go figure.
The good news is that we gained a game. But to take 63 ABs to scrounge 3 runs? Pitching bails out listless offense AGAIN. Nice to see E-Rod have a good game, but he's still an enigma to me.
19 INNINGS ?? Really ?? Against TORONTO ?? What a sad state of affairs !!! thumb_d slap rofl
A six hour game, a bit much.
When I said they would take another 9 to score one more run, it was a joke, not a suggestion!
Wow, what a pitiful offense. I went to be but left the TV on and was half awake, half snoozing through some innings. The loud noise must have woke me up when they won.

Well mark, it looks to me like we have some people who just like to split hairs.......maybe I should get a hair splitter myself.
A game the Red Sox should have lost and the Yankees should have won. Amazing.
