Title: GAME #137, BOSTON RED SOX AT NEW YORK YANKEES
Post by: Bear on September 03, 2017, 01:52:55 AM
RED SOX V YANKEES

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 3, 2017, 7:30 PM AT YANKEE STADIUM

TV:  ESPN

BOSTON, (77-59)........................................................................................NEW YORK, (72-63)

BOSTON:

CHRIS SALE, LHP, 15-6, 2.77 ERA, 264K

The ace will pitch under the bright lights Sunday night  vs the Yankees,
looking for his first win in a rivalry matchup.  Sale has pitched well against
the Yankees this season, posting a 2.12 ERA in four starts but losing both of
his decisions.

NEW YORK:

LUIS SEVERINO, RHP, 11-6, 3.14 ERA, 192K

Severino permitted three solo homers in his last effort, a 6-2 loss to the
Indians on Monday.  He surrendered a career-high 10 runs (eight earned) to
the Red Sox in their last matchup on August 12.

Sale-Severino duel set for Sox-Yanks finale

Ian Browne

The final Red Sox-Yankees game of 2017 -- at least for the regular season -- will feature the best pitching matchup of this four-game series, with Sox ace Chris Sale facing Bombers breakout Luis Severino live on ESPN Sunday night from Yankee Stadium.

Sale (15-6, 2.77 ERA) leads the Majors with 264 strikeouts, while Severino (11-6, 3.14) is fourth in the American League, and just eight shy of his first 200-K season.

After dropping two of the first three games of the series, the Red Sox have a 4 1/2-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East. New York has a one-game lead over Minnesota for the top AL Wild Card spot.

This will be the fourth time Sale has faced the Yankees since July 15, and his fifth start against the Bombers this season.

"I think that's the fun part of this game," said Sale. "I've talked to [Red Sox hitting coach] Chili [Davis] about this a lot. It's kind of like a little cat-and-mouse game. It's a game of adjustments, too. I'm adjusting to them and they're adjusting to me. I've seen them a lot, so it should be interesting."

In the rivalry matchups this season, Sale is 0-2 with a 2.12 ERA. He has mastered the Yankees throughout his career, notching a 1.58 ERA in 11 starts.

Severino dominated the Red Sox on April 26 and July 15, allowing one earned run over a combined 14 innings, but the righty was roughed up at Fenway Park on Aug. 12, giving up eight runs in 4 1/3 innings.

The rivals have played a tightly contested series this season. The Yankees took seven of the first 10 meetings, but the Red Sox have won five of the last eight.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who was activated on Friday, will make his second start since returning from a left knee injury. Pedroia had an encouraging first game back, making two brilliant defensive plays.

• The Yankees hope to get the valuable Starlin Castro back in the lineup. The second baseman underwent an emergency dental procedure on Saturday morning after losing one of his front teeth.

• The Red Sox gave the slumping Xander Bogaerts Friday and Saturday off, but manager John Farrell said the shortstop is likely to be back in there Sunday. It will be interesting to see whether Bogaerts benefits from the rest. Since July 8, he is slashing .201/.276/.299 with two homers and 11 RBIs.

Why can't they just tell the truth, that Boggey is hurt & would benefit by a week off so that he may be productive in the playoffs ???? iono slap rofl

Don't think Severino's going to implode like his last game against the Sox.   Sale must go 8 with 0 runs allowed.

We need to get firm control of the AL East and run off another string.  The Tribe has now won 11 in a row.

Farrell needs to cut the crap with the personal catchers. Leon in the lineup puts us down a man offensively.

Sale looks a bit rough.  Last time Sox faced this pitcher they lit him up. Time to repeat that.

This is looking rough.  Sale struggling, but of course if he'd get the outside of the plate like Severino gets it would be a different story.

What is ESPN thinking going through 3 Red Sox at bats with an interview with Didi Gregorius?  Nobody cares, do it in the pre-game show or something, then they keep talking about him.  God they are awful.

Funny on JBJ's slide in to second, they said it was a "good slide".   It was a terrible slide, he dove too soon and almost was out.

7 runs in 3 1/2 games is not going to get it done.

Well Yanks up 1-0, I'd say it's pretty much over.

4-1/3 innings and 3 ER. Not a stellar outing. Not that the offense has been a bit of help.

Getting sick of looking at these stupid Judge fans. Although I bet the rest of baseball is sick of looking at our OFers dance after every win, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

There's the Sox offense. Pray for a mistake by the other team. Only way they can get on the board. In this case it was two mistakes.

How many times are we forced to endure watching Red Sox batters take a called third strike.  Doesn't anyone know how to protect the plate with two strikes any more.

Gotta love it, two guys get on via errors, then one scores on a past ball.

And yet another Red Sox batter looks at strike 3 right down the middle.  A freaking big fat hanging curve ball in the case of Moreland, but most of the night these guys don't swing on the numerous fastballs down the pipe.

What a pathetic team - the announcer summed it up without realizing it a moment ago "this is how they scored their run last night".  Even he knows the scoring is over.

BTW, Betts looks intimidated at the plate.

Especially a hanging curve ball right down the middle.  Benintendi watched a fastball middle down that he could have easily cleared out too.

Sox showing who they really are.  There's a part of me that wants them to go down in flames, get rid of many of them as they can and start over.

It was over at 1-0.  This is now a game of HRs and power.  The AAA DeadBats of Boston don't have that or much of any semblance of an offense.

Maybe this charade of a #&#@%! team will get swept by their daddies, the Os, in a few weeks and we can start talking about the offseason.

I like CLE vs CHC rematch.  That would be good for baseball fans.

As I stated elsewhere, I believe that JF giving Sale an extra day's rest when
facing a more difficult team, may throw him off his pitch.  He's trained all
year to pitch on a five-day rotation, and suddenly, we give him six days!
It may work in reverse on Sale.
Your thoughts?????

Nice to see you here Muggah....lone time no-see.

I am calling for a "COURT OF INQUIRY".... It is criminal that Sale was left in for 109 pitches in a lousy 4 1/3.... Although only giving up 3 runs, the guy is burnt out and needs 10 days off... Give the YANK$ credit, they have some BATS.... Compared to the SOX 5 hits, 1 double !! Do we have any batting coaches ??  Or maybe it doesn't matter...  thumb_d iono slap rofl

9 runs in 4 games means a losing weekend in the Bronx.  Just pitiful.

Ramirez looks to be toast.  Don't know what the problem is there but some of his at bats are almost comical.  He's becoming Panda.

Betts is lost and they still think he can drive in a ton of runs.  Too bad, but at least he's not the disappearing Bogaerts.

Apparently they can only win if the pitching can hold the other team to a run or less.  The big flaw, the lack of power, really shows against good pitching.  You can't count on stringing together 5 hits to score 1 or 2 runs, you need to get a man or two on and get a homer.  It's how baseball is played in 2017.

No it's not......not with a moron like Farrell leading the team and with the specter of having Pukegaerts and Young in the lineup tonight.  3.5 lead is a disaster waiting to happen.  Pukie Betts and Co. had better stop shitting the bed and stand up and be counted.  This team seems devoid of heart, guts and balls, and everything in that regard was pointed out blatantly this past series.

Yes, that might be a consolation Ted but you know damn well it won't change a thing.  Prune Face will only double down and insist that Farrell is his manager and that he  has full confidence that Pukegaerts and Hanley will come back strong----and THEN WE WILL BE IN MORE DEEP SHIT IN 2018 THAN WE ARE NOW.
