Title: GAME #53, BOSTON RED SOX AT BALTIMORE ORIOLES
Post by: Bear on June 01, 2017, 04:18:38 AM
RED SOX V ORIOLES

THURSDAY, JUNE, 1, 2017, 7PM AT ORIOLE PARK AT CAMDEN YARDS

TV:  NESN, MASN, MLBN (OUT-OF-MARKET ONLY)

BOSTON, ( 29-21)...................................................................BALTIMORE (27-24)

BOSTON:

EDUARDO RODRIGUEZ, LHP, 4-1, 2.77 ERA, 59K

The lefty opens a four-game series against the Orioles on a roll and
ready to pitch at a venue where he usually dominates.  Lifetime at
Camden yards, Rodriguez is 3-1 with a 1.34 ERA in six starts.

BALTIMORE:

WADE MILEY, LHP, 1-3 3.02 ERA, 51K

Miley is coming off his sixth outing of fewer than six innings.
Despite having one of the best outings of the year against Toronto,
the lefty gave up four runs on eight hits through five innings against
Houston last weekend.

Red Sox, O's renew rivalry in Baltimore

Ian Browne

Red Sox-Orioles, which has turned into a heated rivalry this season, resumes on Thursday night when the American League East foes open a four-game series at Camden Yards.

It will be the fourth series between the clubs already this season, and the Birds have taken five of the first nine games.

Eduardo Rodriguez, once a top Orioles prospect, draws the assignment in the opener for the Red Sox. He has thrived at Camden Yards, going 3-1 with a 1.34 ERA in six starts. The lefty has been on fire of late, and he will try to notch his eighth consecutive quality start.

"It's just a matter of his abilities coming together," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "This has always been an extremely talented young guy. We've talked about his maturity. We've talked about his progression. It's been on display here for a good number of starts consecutively. He's in a very good place. It's good to see him put it together."
Lefty Wade Miley, who pitched for the Red Sox in 2015, takes the ball for Baltimore.

Though Miley has done a nice job minimizing the damage this season, the Orioles would like to see him go deeper into games. He's gone fewer than six innings in five of his last six starts, including a five-inning performance in a 5-2 loss to the Astros his last time out.

The previous Red Sox-Orioles meetings this season have included subplots galore.

O's manager Buck Showalter called the Red Sox out on April 11 for making too much of a flu that had spread around the team. Manny Machado slid into Dustin Pedroia's surgically repaired left knee on April 21, forcing the second baseman out of the lineup for a few days. Two days later, Matt Barnes threw at Machado and was suspended.

When the teams met at Fenway from May 1-4, Dylan Bundy hit Mookie Betts on the left leg with a fastball and Chris Sale threw a pitch behind Machado, prompting the star third baseman to go on a verbal tirade directed at the lefty in his postgame interview.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred had a conference call with both teams during that last series, and he essentially told them to cool it.

The hope of both teams is that baseball will be the focal point for this go-around.

The Red Sox and Orioles are currently trying to catch the Yankees in the American League East.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• With the left-handed Miley pitching the opener, the Red Sox will have Sam Travis in the lineup at first base. Outfielder Chris Young will also start in place of either Andrew Benintendi or Jackie Bradley Jr. Pablo Sandoval, who is starting against righties only for now, will be on the bench.

• Whenever Betts plays at Camden Yards, the fans sitting in the outfield stands should be ready. The outfielder has 10 homers in 92 at-bats in Baltimore.

• Miley has a 3.02 ERA across 10 starts this season despite walking more batters (31 in 53 innings) than any other AL starter. He has struggled to hit the strike zone with much frequency -- only 38.9 percent of his pitches have been within the zone, the lowest rate in the Majors among starters.

Excellent decision by Farrell in benching Beni against Miley since he is TERRIBLE against LHP. A demotion good be coming soon if he doesn't  get his act together.  Hit.179 against leftys  will not cut it .

He hits .258 against lefties and .268 against right handers. Not a big difference. Pitchers have learned how to pitch to him and he hasn't adjusted yet.

2 out runs are killers. A single and a HR. Sox are down 2-0 after 1 inning.

Missing with your pitches to hr hitters not a good thing. 3-1 Orioles now after 4 innings. Now 7-1 in 6th. All runs via the hr.

Yeah, not so much a game again. Oh well.

Not the way to open a crucial series by any means.  We lost the opener against the Pale Hose and then came back and won the next two.  However, the Orioles are not the White Sox and the more I see our team the more I get the impression they are what they are----a very average team lacking is some very important areas both physically and mentally.  Maybe they'll pull what the Yankees did in 2009 when they stumbled and bumbled until they caught fire and ran the field after the ASB, or they will be what they currently are.  Depressing!!!!!!  Maybe tomorrow we'll think differently.

The O's pretty much own us so far this season.  E-Rod didn't have it tonight.  His next 2 starts may well determine what he really is: a potential top 3 rotation guy or a #4 or #5.

What mysterious fall? Last 44 innings he only gave up 11 er .Even the great Kershaw stumbles every now and then. 1bad outing doesn`t say the bottom is falling out. This 1 game fall as you say means as much as if he through a perfect game .Not much.

What fall ?  You ask what fall ??  I am talking about the fall in the bullpen during pregame warm ups ???  Seems like every year there is a fall for E-rod, unless it could be vertigo ?? rofl

I didn't watch the last couple of innings so was surprised at the final score.  The O's continually do two things - hit the long ball as well as anyone, especially against the Sox; and play every game against the Sox like it's do or die (which is funny because they seem to always get schooled by the Yankees).  The Sox are once again trying to figure out how to manage their up and down bats, secondary backup infielders and injured veterans.  The three veterans on the team - Ramirez, Pedroia and Sandoval are out or injured.  If Benitendi hits, JBJ doesn't and vice versa.  They can't rely on the guys who were backup to the utility infielder to play half of the infield and nobody seems to know what Hanley Ramirez is supposed to do -take huge cuts and try to hit it out all the time, or try to get on base.  Then they're stuck working around Sandoval who may be ready to DH but Hanley has that job.  The pitching needs to remain stable (no pun intended toward E-Rod who has trouble standing up at times.)  I wonder if he's just a klutz or what?

Probably just injury prone like Pedey .Of course the way Pedey goes 100% every play its a wonder he has lasted this long.
