I’m amazed that they’ve gone so far with closer by committee without calling it that and getting a pass for the most part. I lay the blame though with the front office who didn’t replace two solid arms. We maybe gained a quality arm in Walden, but that left an open spot and no room for error (like Brasier).
This guy is awful too, can’t throw a strike.

Walden did a pretty good job at closer so what does moron Cora do. He puts in a hold position and he craps out Brasier did well in two appearances in the 8th inning and sucked as closer so Cora uses him as a closer and he sucks again. My God, what an idiot we have as a manager.

I've said this so many times it is a wonder if no one hasn't heard it on this board markj.......Bogaerts is the last hitter I want up late in the game with the contest on the line. He will fail just about every time ands has been doing this shit since 2014. I hate seeing him up there in such spots, but this loss is on Cora. We will close the series tomorrow and be lucky to win one game in New York this coming weekend. Make book on it. Too late to find a dependable closer this late. All that's left is a Oliver Perez or a Mejica quality, unless you bust the budget for the $88mil guy. You can trade for one, but that could cost some good, promising pieces on the farm.
What the long term risk is, JDM pondering an opt out playing for a .500, .550 team, Mookie also losing interest? Are the Sox more promising than playing for the upstart Brewers, Phils, Twins? Good crops don't last without a lot of cultivating. I'm starting to think the FO believes the core of the team is so great it can overcome the hiccups.
At least the Sox announcers from O'Brien to Caron on the post game show were all over this. O'Brien mentioned that this is the sort of loss that should trigger changes and Caron mentioned that "closer by committee" has failed. It only took them two months to figure out what I've said since the offseason - you don't replace two arms and don't have a closer you're going to lose games like this.

Management had plenty of time in the off-season to recognize their folly in the BP. But for me one red flag was their probably holding out for Steven Wright to get healthy. Then when he went PED they did absolutely nothing. Johnson on the shelf, Thornburg's awful spring, yada, yada.
Spent more time in ST massaging all those weaker arms. A fool's errand.

BTW I thought Mookie displayed that fly ball which last year he would have caught. I think there is something to the comment about some guys are losing interest. Playing for Manager Alfred E. I'd be more worried if the manager went in there with his hair on fire and complained to the press about the performance of his bullpen. That would be Bobby Valentine type tactics there and we were certainly glad when he left town. If a manager throws his guys under the bus in a post game conference he'll lose them completely. Everyone knows what happened there - the pen failed miserably. In fact maybe Cora was making a statement to DD - this is what you gave me so I have to put these guys in.
As for the Mookie play, that warning track was slick and once he turned one way there was no way he was going to change his footwork and start moving the other way. If it were a nice dry evening I'd be more concerned.
It isn't BV like to rightly point out that the bullpen isn't fine. It is however ridiculous to say everything is peachy when it isn't. The Red Sox manager is either in deep denial about the patently obvious to anyone with half a baseball brain or he is incompetent. Because our boy genius manager won a world series everyone is giving him a pass. But, John Farrell won a world series also and he now has some minor job I believe with the Cincinnati Reds.
I have come to the conclusion, that the Red Sox manager has taken a championship team and mismanaged them to a thus far sub par performance. The team has so much talent that even a total incompetent nincompoop should be able take them to the playoffs given the number of truly dismal teams such as the Orioles whom they will play.
If the Red Sox current manager, however, continues to blunder his way through this season it is entirely possible that teams with far less talent will finish ahead of Boston and secure playoff berths. If that should happen, one can only hope that ownership would consign him to the baseball wilderness of scouting talent in the Siberian winter league. I believe the Vladivostok Gulag Bears has a closer that might impress the Red Sox current skipper as being fine too.
If Cora came out and said the bullpen sucks he'd rightly be fired. A manager is simply not going to throw his guys under the bus, period.
I beg to difer. Managers say it all the time that so and so has to perform better. No manager would be so blunt as to say they totally suck but there are ways to get the point across. Even the current Red Sox manager called out one of his starters some time back, specifically ERod.
The game hasn't deteriorated that much that a manager can not publicly chide poor performance. Moreover there is a huge difference between berating some one and down right lying calling something fine when it is clearly not.
Regardless, the current manager's performance to date has been considerably.less than satisfactory. If with this talent the team doesn't make the playoffs, I would echo Ken Harrelson's strike out call, "He gone!"
Just got home and I will gladly put this thread to bed and try and forgot what happened last night and hope that Cora and Dombrowski learn from it. To Murph----dropping dead to get a closer means working yourself to the bone to get it done, not dieing. In other words you worth yourself to death by working your ass off to get what we need. To Elk, Cora is signed long term and they will not eat any more money. We can hope he catches himself and makes a managerial comeback next season because we all know he has shit the bed badly. I'm convinced that this closer by committee should have been shit canned after the 2003 season when that policy cost us about a dozen games during the early part of the season and cost us the AL East Title and homefield advantage for the ALCS with the Yankees. But sometimes people never learn. Cora must now pick one guy and make him closer and keep our fingers crossed. My first choice is Waden, my last one is Brasier.
Not watching the game tonight. I was so angry and pissed off last evening that I almost went catatonic. I will watch some TV and do some historical reading. Good luck to our team tonight. They will badly need it and I don't think it will do them much good. That's how I feel last night's loss affected them.
Contract or not if Sox fail to make the playoffs with this talent it would have been because they were seriously mismanaged, and the individual responsible has to be held accountable and discharged.

That's the way it is supposed to be Elk but it won't end up that way. Cora is safe for at least three seasons, including this one. Hell, Farrell got an extension after the 2014 season when the team finished in LAST place in the AL East. Any team that sends out trash like Weber, Brewer, Velasquez, Brasier, Lakens and Barnesd has lost its way. It happens every year after our team wins a World Series but this could be the most catastrophic fall of all. And what does the team do???? They sign supreme choker Bogaerts to a long term contract when he is the last guy you want up there in a key game. My wife and I are going to Boston and New York on a baseball tour with Sports Travel and will see a Red Sox-Rays game. Right now I am not looking forward to that at all. It is so hard to take how this team can fall so low in such a short time. Cora has managed pathetically while Dombrowski has done nothing to help our bullpen save for sending out a pile of garbage when we need some relievers who can get some outs consistently. We did nothing over the winter to even try and upgrade our bullpen. F#$% this team.
