RED SOX V MARINERS

TUESDAY, JULY 25, 2017, 10 PM AT SAFECO FIELD

TV:  NESN, ROOTNW

BOSTON, (55-46)......................................................................................SEATTLE, (50-51)

BOSTON:

DREW POMERANZ, LHP, 10-4, 3.51 ERA, 108K

The lefty is on one of the best runs of his career, in his last eleven
starts, Pomeranz is 7-1 with a 2.64 ERA.  In nine road starts, Pomeranz
is 4-2 with a 3.04 ERA

SEATTLE:

FELIX HERNANDEZ, RHP, 5-4, 3.88 ERA, 60K

The veteran appears back on track, posting a 1.00 ERA over his three
starts with just 11 hits and 22 strikeouts in 18 innings.  This will be his
first time facing Boston this year, but he's 8-4 with a 3.90 ERA in 18 career
starts against the Sox.

Devers to face King Felix in Red Sox debut

Josh Horton

Welcome to The Show and an American League East pennant race, kid.

Red Sox top prospect Rafael Devers will make his first Major League start on Tuesday night against the Mariners at Safeco Field. He'll face Mariners right-hander Felix Hernandez opposite Boston lefty Drew Pomeranz, one of the hottest pitchers in the game.

The 20-year-old third baseman and MLB's No. 4 prospect, according to MLBPipeline.com, cruised through Boston's Minor League system, playing just nine games in Triple-A Pawtucket before receiving his big league callup. He's ecstatic to face an established Major League pitcher like Hernandez (5-4, 3.88 ERA) in his first start.

"I admire him because he's a pitcher who has won Cy Youngs before," Devers said. "To be able to face him and watch him pitch is an awesome experience."

Hernandez (5-4, 3.88) has been on a roll lately, going 2-1 with a 1.00 ERA in his last three starts.

Pomeranz (10-4, 3.51 ERA) is having one of the best stretches of his career, owning a 7-1 record with a 2.64 ERA in his last 11 starts. He issued five walks in his last start on Wednesday against the Blue Jays, but he limited the damage to allow one unearned run on three hits in 6 2/3 innings.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• Pomeranz has fared well against the Mariners in his big league career, posting a 3.51 ERA in 12 appearances (three starts) versus Seattle.

• The long ball has hurt Hernandez more than it has in the past. His 1.9 home runs per nine innings is the highest of his career, with his next closest at 1.1 (2008 and '16).

• Mariners outfielder Ben Gamel is on an 11-game hit streak.

Other than Devers, there aren't a lot of good reasons to stay up late and watch these guys not hit.

The likeability of this Sox team took a huge hit today IMO. Ownership needs to address it. Your fans don't like your team. That's a problem

This says it all......

Sox have been shut out 9 times in 2017 only 6 times in 2016.

Since April 15th Red Sox catchers are batting .233/.282/.321, 45% worse than league average, ranking 29th in MLB.

But 16 times the year before, if I recall correctly.

Sox are taking an absolute beating PR-wise over this. The magnitude of it is fast approaching 2011's "chicken and beer parties" level.

Boston Strong‏ @BostonStrong_34

The Red Sox have 'strong interest' for SS Zack Cozart, he's not in the Reds lineup tonight in the Bronx.

Hmmm!!!

I don't have my game scores for that year any longer, but baseball-reference.com lists 15 shutouts for 2014. I thought they'd hit 10% (or 16) for that year, but maybe I'm wrong. Either way, that was a brutal year.

SAD to think that our team is already out of this game.
WHAT has happened to this team??????

CRAP.
4 game losing streak . . .

AND the Yankees and the Rays won tonight.

ipot

Luckily this ended in the 3rd inning. You can't even blame Pomeranz since the offense won't get more than 1-2 runs at best anyway.

This team is headed for the gutter. 6-12 since the aberration that was a 6 game winning streak.

Even the 2012 Valentine squad was more fun to watch.
