Title: GAME #97, TORONTO BLUE JAYS AT BOSTON RED SOX
Post by: Bear on July 20, 2017, 03:32:01 AM
BLUE JAYS V RED SOX

THURSDAY, JULY 20, 2017, 1:30 PM AT FENWAY PARK

TV:  NESN, SNET

TORONTO, ( 43-51).........................................................................................BOSTON, (54-42)

TORONTO:

FRANCISCO LIRIANO, LHP, 5-5, 6-4, 64K

Liriano is scheduled to make this start despite leaving his last outing after
just two-plus innings because of a sore neck.  He was evaluated by a doctor
who prescribed rest, but the lefty was cleared to pitch after a bullpen session
Tuesday.

BOSTON:

DOUG FISTER, RHP, O-3, 6.75 ERA, 15K

The sinkerballer will try to recover from a tough last start before the break,
when he gave up five its and six runs (four earned) in 3 2/3 innings against the
Rangers.  Fister took a no-decision against the Jays on June 30, giving up three
runs.

Vets Liriano, Fister close Jays-Red Sox series

Evan Chronis

Right-hander Doug Fister goes for his first win with the Red Sox, while Blue Jays lefty Francisco Liriano will try to get back on track as the two meet in Thursday afternoon's series finale at Fenway Park.

Fister was originally scheduled to face Toronto on Tuesday, but was scratched after pitching 2 2/3 innings of relief in Boston's 16-inning loss to the Yankees on Saturday.

The sinkerballer earned a no-decision after going five innings and allowing three earned runs in a start at Toronto on June 30.

This start will likely be Fister's last for the foreseeable future, as left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez returned to Boston's rotation Monday after being on the disabled list since June 2.

Red Sox manager John Farrell says the goal all along was to have Fister be an effective arm in the bullpen.

"When he came over here, that was the plan," Farrell said on Wednesday. "He was well aware of that. That would be the plan going forward as we work through these games and get back on track."

Liriano's first start back from the All-Star break was plagued with neck soreness, forcing him to leave his start against the Tigers after two-plus innings. He took the loss, giving up five earned runs and four walks.

Blue Jays manager John Gibbons says Liriano felt good as the team monitored him during a bullpen session Tuesday.
The left-hander is 3-4 with a 5.44 ERA in eight career starts against the Red Sox.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• Liriano has gotten a strike with just 55.3 percent of his fastballs this season, the lowest rate among all MLB pitchers who have thrown at least 500 four-seamers, two-seamers and sinkers.

• Dustin Pedroia is 7-for-17 with two doubles and three walks against Liriano.

• Blue Jays designated hitter Kendrys Morales has homered off Fister three times in 25 career at-bats.

Home stand ends today with a  "get away game at  1:30", it would be great to "get away with another win" !!!! thumb_u rofl

Yeah...this Fister thing is baffling.  There's no one else?   A W is a W.  It counts.  Saving the other arms for the WC trip or switching up Fister over there is "6 of one/half dozen of the other."

Odd play with the outfielder missing the ball which bounced right into his hand. Then hitting Leon coming home with the throw and the ball still goes to the catcher to get Leon out. Betts cleans up the mess though with a rbi single. Sox up 3-1 after 2 innings.

Really bad pitched inning that should of had no runs scored. Talk about ugly and having bad luck. Just a odd odd game so far. This game has had some strange things happen.

Fister's a washed up mound clown.
And just a dumb move by Farrell to go for the split. 3 out of 4 should be the goal.

Now, we'll have to burn some pen arms to do mop up.

Nice response in the bottom of the 3rd.  Hanley Ks, Bradley Ks and a 1-2-3.  Leone must be thinking this is pitching heaven.

Fister needs to GO.

Sox score 3 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
AND then he gives it back by walking the first two batters.

Jays 5 - Sox 3

(AND I didn't see the pop up that scored 2 runs.)

Fister should not be in the rotation, bullpen or MLB. Loose with the future and not the past. Just leave him in for 130 pitches and save the staff.

Well, that inning went just as planned...1,2,3.
So Farrell is NOT going to make a move.
Wish I could tell you how I really feel about this game, Fister, Farrell and our Offense.

TAKE him out now.
Just gave up a solo shot on the first pitch of the 5th inning.

SO very frustrating.

Error, bad pitching -
Toronto took Liriano out after 3 runs in the second inning.

Another crazy play. Guy falls down checking his swing and the ball hits his bat and rolls out to Abad who throws to 1st for the 3rd out. Was nice of Hanley to finally decide to touch the bag for the out. LOL.

I smell the stench of Dombrowski in all this.  He had Fister in Detroit, probably still likes the guy and is determined to prove his point that the guy still has it .  Well he doesn't and today he has proven what a worthless bum he now is.  He is done.....he needs to go to the bullpen, to the minors or given his release.  It is pretty clear that Dumbo pulled a boner signing him because he has done nothing at all positive for the team. and unless we rally we will give back the game we gained last night.  Keep in mind that everything Fister throws he gives his teammates a big middle finger and never wins.  I saw him in Boston against the Angels and was disgusted by him from the start.  He is a loser and needs to get his rotten ass out of Boston.  Hear that DD?

Well these things happen and a tough gutty pitcher will overcome this and get that out he needs to end the potential uprising.  Not Fister because he is a rotten no good bum.  Something like this happened in Boston on June 25.  A double play call was reversed so the inning went on.  All this shithead had to do was get another out.  Instead Pisster gave up two booming doubles and a rope single and killed our chances of winning the game since we had one of our usual droughts that Sunday.  If that crud would have bowed his neck he might have gotten out of it, just as he might have today if he wasn't such a worthless and gutless puke.

Well you can upset when you realize that that most likely Dombrowski seems determined to see this farce play out indefinitely.  What is clear to all of us from what I've been reading is that Fister is horse dung; he is finished as a ML pitcher.  The Tigers knew it, the Angels knew i t and only someone's ego is getting in the way.  Send this guy away NOW.  Th point is he has done nothing but lose; he hasn't contributed one thing positive to the  Red Sox.  He needs to go Dombrowski.

He will be gone soon. I gave up getting worked up over sports a long time ago and I feel so much better watching Sox games as I have been for close to 60 years.

Holt screwed up.
Foster walked 4 guys in one inning.
And Pedey was a squirrel with a nut on that 3 run shot that made it close.

Again, 2-3 bats actually hitting in any given day.  6-7 since the win streak in earlier this month.  ::)

4-4 homestand is not good.  They should have at least picked up a game on either of these opponents.  If the Yankees play the Sox to a tie and then go out and improve their bullpen, are they now the better team?  While this game is the first stinker by a starter in a while, I would also hope that it's the last we've seen of Fister.  But even though they came up with 6 runs, they need to find consistent offense.

I'm not sure the Yanks should be the standard to evaluate us.  At the end of the year will be the Stro's and probably Cleveland.  Those two will have great pitching and noisy bats in a short playoff series.  But it also has merits that if we don't survive NY and TB, we'll be a tough spot.

Yup.  The danger is dropping into a WC slot and then we're just a 50/50 shot to get to a series.  In a WC game Sale isn't the problem, imho.  It'll be the bats going cold.

Maybe they should have been shut out yesterday so they could save those runs for tonight when they have Chris Sale pitching for them.  Our disgusting and gutless hitters have starved Chris for runs all damn season and it is high time this stops.  Since we have almost zero chance of getting to the World Series with so many of our hitters fouling up the place, it would be nice if we could get Sale the Cy Young Award if chokers like Bogaerts, Moreland, Leon-Vazquez, not to mention now Jackie and Andy, start earning their keep maybe they can help Chris win enough games to give us a season ending winning record at least, as well as get him the Cy Young.  The hitters owe Chris Sale at least that much.  It is almost criminal how crappy they've been when he pitches.
