Title: GAME #66, BOSTON RED SOX AT PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES
Post by: Bear on June 15, 2017, 03:30:37 AM
RED SOX V PHILLIES

THURSDAY, JUNE 15, 2017, 7 PM AT CITIZENS BANK PARK

TV:  NESN, MLBN, (OUT-OF-MARKET ONLY) CSN-P

BOSTON, (37-26).....................................................................PHILADELPHIA, (21-43)

BOSTON:

CHRIS SALE, LHP, 8-2, 2.97 ERA, 126K

The Red Sox ace earned his fourth consecutive win in his last start, striking
out seven batters in seven innings to lead the Red Sox to an 11-3 win over the
Tigers.  He gave up nine hits in the outing, which is his second-highest outing
total of the season.

PHILADELPHIA:

NICK PIVETTA, RHP, 1-3, 5.52 ERA, 27K

Pivetta has looked good at times, but he continues to be plagued by his
inability to pitch into games.  He has made six starts with the Phillies, but
he has not pitched more than five innings in any of those starts.

Sale, Red Sox out to sweep reeling Phillies

Stephen Pianovich

Chris Sale, the Major League leader in strikeouts, will take the mound Thursday at Citizens Bank Park as the Red Sox attempt to sweep the four-game home-and-home series from the Phillies.

Sale, who has 126 strikeouts and nine whiffs or more in 10 of his 13 outings, will oppose Phillies righty Nick Pivetta, who will make his seventh career start. Pivetta allowed four runs on four hits in five innings in his last start, a loss to the Cardinals on Saturday.

That defeat was part of a season-long eight-game losing streak for the Phillies, who haven't won since topping the Braves on June 6. Meanwhile, the Red Sox have won three in a row and are 16-7 since May 21.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• A significant factor in Sale's strikeout success is the lofty rate at which he generates in-zone swing-and-misses -- a Major League-leading 20.2 percent. Moreover, Sale also ranks among the MLB leaders on in-zone pitches (min. 200) with the third-lowest expected weighted on-base average, .270, behind only Max Scherzer (.246) and Carlos Martinez (.248).

• Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland was out of the starting lineup Wednesday night after getting hit with a pitch on his left foot Tuesday night. Manager John Farrell said Moreland is day to day and could be back for the series finale. Hanley Ramirez made his first start of the season at first base Wednesday.

• The Phillies have lost eight consecutive games against Interleague opponents, matching the franchise's worst stretch against the American League. The Phils are 0-3 against the Red Sox, 0-3 against the Rangers and 0-2 against the Mariners in 2017. The club also dropped eight straight Interleague games in 2014.

This 2 cents writer is like so many others out there talking about Sales Ks.
Why don`t they talk about his last 7 games with a 4.2 ERA? That to me is concerning.I understand his April was off the charts but he has been shaky of late.Tonight would be the perfect game to right himself and get back to being the dominant guy he can be.

They talk more when he pitches great and gets no run support.  I think they're afraid to say anything bad about the best player on the team!

There's been so much negative reaction to our team this season and so much angst to go along with it that it is hard to center on someone who seems to be our "Big Hope".  Still, I'm with all of you hoping that Chris Sale is on top of his game tonight and that we don't stop hitting after a couple of games.

Swinging at crap. These bums have hung Sale out to dry again. And they've been shut out too many times this season.

Sale had the best looking swing tonight. Pedroia k's in a critical spot in the 8th where he needed to make contact and the game ends on a k. Oh well. On to Houston.

No it's not Rob.  You know as well as i do that our team has it in them to make any team look good.   Too bad Sale couldn't shut them out but even then all we'd get was a tie.  I actually thought we might still pull it out in the ninth when Bradley walked with two out---and then I saw Fatso Sandoval go up there and swing at everything in sight---a more disgusting example of ineptness to a bad evening.  And now we go to Houston.  Nice if we could have won tonight.

Know what I hated most about this game markj????  Just seeing Sandoval in that lineup.  Every time I see him at the plate I'm reminded of a sumo wrestler----and he swings like one too.  You know the Red Sox had always prided themselves in working the count and at least getting a good pitch to hit if the guy was pounding the strike zone.  You do NOT have to throw fatso a strike; his plate discipline is pathetic and his countenance is every worse.

Write this one down in the annals of Most Pathetic Games of 2017.   They're batting against a guy whose got the dubious distinction of never passing 5 innings with at least 100 inns as a starter Phillies history and get shut down.   Sale, of all people, is the go ahead run at 2nd with 0 outs.

A f----king disgrace.  Sale, again, is robbed of run support.

Bats went to sleep, except for Sale.  He has to be thinking "what more can I do?"  I think we also saw that perhaps he pitches differently with a lead and really bears down when his team doesn't score.

Panda was pathetic in that last at bat.  The first pitch was a strike, the rest not even close but that doesn't stop Panda who looked like he never saw a breaking ball in his life.

With so many teams struggling to stay at 500, one might be inclined to sluff this all off and say....HEY THINGS ARE OK BECAUSE WE ARE EIGHT GAMES OVER 500.  Really?  Does anyone really want to say that after what went down last night?  Well maybe one or two but the rest of us have to know  that we really pissed a way a chance  to not only sweep a series but gain another game on the Yankees. And we didn't.  We gave Sale no support....again and we lost to a team mired deep in last place in their division.  I keep waiting in vain for the Red Sox to finally put it together and make a good ruin in the pennant race but the team keeps coming up boxcars.  Does this team have heart, guts, balls, and a determination to separate itself from the pack?  Yes, they do, BUT.....they can only seem to do it on occasion, maybe two or three games in a row and then they all go to sleep.  Last night the whole offense stunk but what numbed me to the bone was seeing Sandoval flailing up there at the plate for the last out.  Isn't there any way besides as act of God to get this guy out of our lineup and out of Boston?  Does Prune Face really think he can get a payback from that ridiculous contract the tendered him after the 2014 season. Does DD really believe this guy is going to hit and field and not be a total embarrassment to the ball club.  Once again, he has to go.  Maybe we can trade him to Milwaukee for their third baseman, a guy named Travis Shaw, currently hitting 302 with 11 homers and 45 RBI's.  Think he could have helped us more than your pet Fatso owner Prune Face?????

I see neither of you solved my problem,,,,,namely, how to we get rid of John Farrell who most of us know is an inept manager and one of the worst strategists and leaders in the game.  We go nowhere as long as his dead ass is running things.  I notice there are some people Rob who still cannot say one way or another their opinion of Farrell's ability, and I'm sure like you I know the majority think we can and should do better.  Sometimes I wonder if John Henry is really that clueless that he thinks Clueless John is actually a good mamanger WHICH HE MOST CERTAINLY IS NOT.!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know why you think anyone on this board is defending Farrell?  Maybe some people don't react to every issue, but I'd say the general mood here is the Sox are a) not a complete team and b) Farrell doesn't get the most out of the talent he has.  I don't think any of us have any idea how to get him out though as we aren't privy to the relationships between him, Dombrowksi and Henry.  I do know that teams that are over .500 don't generally fire a manager in the middle of the year.

I made no attempt to solve your problem since I have no logical idea.Bingo Billy thinks he has all the answer but actually he has no clue what or how to say it.As far as JF ability his in-game moves are very strange, to say the least .I can`t say if he has a grip on the clubhouse without actually being there. He IMHO is not a good manager and I think he would rank somewhere in the  17-23 range. At the season's start, I thought this team could win around 85  to possibly 90. But like a lot of RSN, I looked into career years from Mookie and JBJ which neither at the moment are having. Mookie of the two has a shot to come close to 2016 but he does have over 100 games left.No one really knows what Beni can become.Porcello is what he is a innings eater and a # 3 or 4 ST at best .Forget 2016 that is a thing of the past that will not be duplicated.E-rod has knee problems that will probably be always there to haunt him.I really doubt JF is going anywhere during this season. Our best hope is he is gone and 2018s start.I do wish that Lovullo was still here as I really believe he was giving good advice to JF in 2016.

As DAD would say,  "Mr. Rob, it does not take a  HOF fan to know that as constructed, the  G M  & Manager leave a lot to be desired" !!  There, did I say it good enough for you ??

It's plain to me that there are a couple of people here who will not commit themselves on Farrell's qualities as a manager.  They skirt around the edges and never say one thing about him one way or another.  Most of us do take a stand and, truth be told, I have been down on Farrell since the opening week of the 2014 season.  I still cannot fathom how the team on the WS in 2013 with him at the helm, and I don't think we'll win another one with him running the team.  Of course, if such a thing happened I would be obliged to tuck in my horns and issue a mea culpa and then be forced to back down.  I would make such a trade Ted.

I can't disagree with the latter half of what you said, but everyone is entitled to their opinions.  It seems here the only issue is how much each of us dislikes Farrell, not if we like him.  Plus as I said, it's a moot point for now unless you have the ear of John Henry.
