Title: GAME #47, SEATTLE MARINERS AT BOSTON RED SOX
Post by: Bear on May 26, 2017, 03:16:59 AM
MARINERS V RED SOX

FRIDAY, MAY 26, 2017, 7PM AT FENWAY PARK

TV:  NESN, ROOTNW, MLBN (OUT-OF-MARKET ONLY)

SEATTLE, ( 24-27)...........................................................................BOSTON, (25-21)

SEATTLE:

YOVANI GALLARDO, RHP, 2-4, 5.84 ERA, 36K

The veteran right-hander is coming off his worst outing of the year, having
allowed nine hits and ten walks (9 earned) in 3 2/3 innings to the White Sox.
He is 2-2 with a 5.28ERA in six career starts against Boston.

BOSTON:

EDUARDO RODRIGUEZ, 5-1, 3.10ERA, 55K

The lefty has been Mr. Consistency for the Red Sox of last, turning
in six straight quality starts.  Rodriguez's last outing was his longest
of the season, as he went eight innings while striking out eight in a win
over the Athletics.

Mariners' Gallardo, Red Sox's E-Rod to duel

Daniel Shiferaw

The Mariners and Red Sox open their first series of 2017 with a three-game holiday weekend set at Fenway Park.

The injury-riddled Mariners come in looking to build momentum after halting their five-game losing streak Thursday with a 4-2 win over the Nationals.

"We've got to pick up our intensity," manager Scott Servais said recently. "We're better than this. I've had enough of it and we need to dial it up a bit."

Injuries to the rotation have forced the Mariners to lean on inexperienced arms, but they'll tap one of the members of the Opening Day rotation Friday -- right hander Yovani Gallardo (2-4, 5.84 ERA).

The Red Sox, meanwhile, will counter with left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (3-1, 3.10 ERA), who will look to earn his third consecutive win.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• Though he's the fourth starter in Boston's rotation, Rodriguez is giving the Sox the innings they need. He's pitched six innings or more in each of his past six starts, going 3-0 with a 2.61 ERA and a 40-11 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

• As a member of the Orioles last season, Gallardo allowed eight runs in 10 innings over two starts against Boston.

• According to Statcast, since the start of last season, the slider has been Gallardo's most-used pitch, as he has thrown it roughly 30 percent of the time. However, out of more than 80 pitchers with at least 500 sliders during that time, Gallardo has the third-highest slugging percentage allowed (.560) and the lowest swinging-strike rate (7.5 percent).

A sweep and 4 straight. They are going in the right direction and since no team in the division is going to run away and hide things are looking good .The Sox are in that group of not running away. This is going to be a dog eat dog right to September. If Price can help out the rotation should keep them in the hunt while the offense tries to stay hot with singles and doubles since IMHO no one will hit 20 bombs this season.

RED SOX LINEUP: DUSTIN PEDROIA (KNEE) OUT VS. MARINERS

Ryan Hannable

After leaving Thursday’s game against the Rangers as a precaution with a knee injury, Dustin Pedroia is out of the lineup Friday against the Mariners.

Manager John Farrell said it was mostly due to the wet conditions, but perhaps there’s something more to it keeping him out on Friday.

Josh Rutledge will get the start at second base and Deven Marrero at third against Seattle righty Yovani Gallardo. Andrew Benintendi will hit second with Pedroia out.

Christian Vazquez will catch Red Sox starter Eduardo Rodriguez.

Another game, another lie.  This is why not many fans trust John Farrell.

Holt will work out on the field and travel with the MLB team. But no game action for a while. Belief is he will return at some point.

Vertigo is something not to mess around with.Sox will take every  precaution with Holt.

Rob, you are 100% right & my earlier comments were wrong. But, begs the question, why did it take soooo long for the Sox to send him to the Dr. in Pittsburg ??? Heck, its been just about the entire season ???

And what exactly is the lie? Maybe Pedroia is hurt more then they let on. Maybe not. But they have no obligation to disclose it to anyone outside the organization until they know 100% what the problem is since it's no one else's business but the Sox and Pedroia.

WEEI podcast said Holt's symptoms are concussion related.  More than likely he won't return for the season. Sometimes this is hard to diagnose - if that was the only symptom.  They might have taken him to various doctors.

Hard to tell how heavily it's raining there. It'd be nice if they call the game, though. A one-run lead is going to be hard to protect.

E-rod pitched a decent game. Made pitches when needed. Can't ask for much more from him.

Agreed. He did well. Would be nice if he'd be a bit more economical and go deeper in the game, but no complaints tonight with no runs allowed.

The red sox have scored more runs on wild pitches or pass balls during this stretch then anytime I can recall.

Pedey is out because the field is still a mess and why take a risk with that knee that Machado hit?

Holt is like a lot of guys that they have concussions and can't come back.  Same thing happened to Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in NASCAR last year.  You can't predict when it's going to get better and it come and go.

The Sox are amazingly inept with runners on.  7 hits and 7 walks and thanks to wild pitches they were able to score.  Wow.  Sure would be nice to have the guy that's on base every time and steals bases up first instead of third.  The lack of power is something else.

And we should be thankful, it's their most effective run scoring play.  Load the bases and hope the opposing pitcher either throws a wild pitch or a base on balls.

Hembree done good again. But I agree, the Sox offense has sucked tonight. Those two gift runs might just save them.

We got back from seeing a high school game where a family friend was coaching a high school team from our area in a CIF Playoff game so I missed the game tonight.  Glad we won.....got good pitching but as mark says, our power is very limited and we should be hitting more bombs than we are.  We should have four or five guys on the team who could hit 20 homers but doesn't look like they're going to get there.   Therefore, we need to hit a lot of singles and doubles, hit in the clutch and get Pedroia back.  Now the question is how long is he going to be out.  If he is out for a sustained period we could be in serious trouble again.  I want him back as soon as possible......like tomorrow or Sunday at the latest.

E-Rod continues to make me  :)   Like how he's coming into his own this year.  If this is the pitcher he will be, Cherington did good sending Miller to the O's for him.  He's essentially our #2.  Pitching much better than Porcello.

I'm with you right there, Nick. I'm enjoying the hell out of watching this kid right now. He really appears to be coming into his own.

5 in a row now, but I'm still not sold on this bunch---not with Farrell still around.

As I said earlier the division will stay a crap shoot all year.Isee the Os as more trouble than the young Yankee pups.Still concerned on this teams lack of power.

Sin of Omission, George
is when someone  tells you only part of the story...that's what JF did.
Precaution; neglected to tell you just how bad the knee is.

First of all it's a organizational decision how much to say about an injury. And maybe they just didn't know how bad it was so why speculate? They held him out as a precaution because of the wet conditions and he was back in today. Under certain conditions he could play the rest of the year with a bum knee and get it worked on in the off season if playing on it won't cause more damage. I'd think he's going to have some discomfort the rest of the year. But the Sox aren't going to say to much about it unless he can't play.
