Title: GAME #31, BOSTON RED SOX AT MINNESOTA TWINS
Post by: Bear on May 07, 2017, 02:26:43 AM
RED SOX V TWINS

SUNDAY, MAY 7, 2017, 2PM AT TARGET FIELD

TV:  NESN, FSNO

BOSTON, (16-14)...................................................................................(15-13)

BOSTON:

CHRIS SALE, LHP, 2-2, 1.38ERA, 63K

The lefty has been magnificient in his first six starts with the Red Sox,
striking out 10 or more the last five times out.  Sale is 8-6 with a 4.58ERA
in 16 career starts against the Twins.

MINNESOTA:

ERVIN SANTANA, RHP, 5-0, .066ERA, 33K

Santana has the lowest ERA among starters and kept it rolling
against the A's on Tuesday.  The right hander didn't have his best
command but still tossed six scoreless innings.

Red-hot Sale, Santana to battle in finale

Patrick Donnelly

Two of the hottest pitchers in the Major Leagues will square of in Sunday afternoon's series finale between the Red Sox and the Twins at Target Field.

Boston left-hander Chris Sale (2-2, 1.38 ERA) has pitched at least seven innings in each of his six starts this season, and he has struck out at least 10 batters in his past five. Meanwhile, Minnesota right-hander Ervin Santana (5-0, 0.66 ERA) leads the Majors in ERA. Sale allowed seven earned runs in 12 innings against the Twins last season when he pitched for the White Sox.

"We've seen Sale a ton with the White Sox," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "We've done OK off him. He can be tough. He's pitching high-caliber baseball right now. Ervin has been as good as anybody in the game. So it'll be fun.'"

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME
• According to the Elias Sports Bureau, this will be the third game since 1982 in which both starting pitchers have an ERA below 1.40.

• Twins second baseman Brian Dozier is expected to miss Sunday's game with a left ankle injury. He has three home runs and a .973 OPS in his career against Sale.

• Red Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi batted cleanup on Saturday for the first time in 63 career games.

It could be another non-support run day for Sale.
Sale would almost have to pitch a perfect game to take the "W"

Sale would have to pitch a perfect game just to get us into extra innings. And then we'll lose.

Tied up. Sox have 3 home runs in this game and just 4 runs total. Twins have tied it up with a bunch of singles and sac flys.

I believe it's still a save situation since he came in originally in a save situation. Could be wrong.

Kimbrel's been sitting a long time. Farrell should leave him there and throw in Abad or someone else. Unless he thinks Kimbrel needs more work.

Looks like we have another day of JBJ riding the bench.Young playing again.

I would sworn that Farrell would have another brain cramp and run Bradley out there with his 175 Mendoza average, but his brain worked and Young got two more hits and two RBI's.  Bradley is now trade bait and I don't want to see him in the lineup again unless someone needs a rest (not likely yet), or someone slumps.  He needs to sit because Young has beaten him out.  Hear that Farrell????

But Lynn played only seven seasons for the Red Sox before they stupidly traded him.  Andrew Benintendi must play for us for at least 10-15 years.  He must NOT be traded....PERIOD!!!!!!  We have a coming star here.

Meatball had company here......you guessed it, Farrell.  As soon as that under-achieving bum was put in there in the eighth inning I knew our  three run lead could disappear and it almost did.  This guy must never be in the game to protect a short lead, that is, a lead of less than six runs.  He is just a gutless choke-up meatball.  Can't stand him.  He sucks.....again.

But we won the series and for the way we've been playing that seems like a king's ransom and the Twins had been playing decent ball.   Still, the jury is still way out with this team of ours.

Nice feeling to pull away in the 9th like that.   It was scary going up until then.  The offense has had 2 good games in a row. Sign of waking up?

Funny that Sale had to give up 4 ERs to get the W ;)

The game was won in the 8th by a clutch performance by Kimbrel.  The 8th also demonstrates why stats don't tell the whole story. Scott's line score shows that he threw a third of an inning and let up no runs but it was his wild pitch that really left the Sox in a jam, men on 2nd and 3rd with only one out and Mauer batting, leaving the mess for Kimbrel to clean up.  Both Kimbrel and Scott get a hold.

There are still teams that feel that Bradley has star quality after his performance for the most part last season.  The Red Sox still talk big about him.  NOW is the time to start thinking about moving him while others have that strong feeling about his talent because if Farrell starts running him our there as we all know he will (remember 2014) and he fails to hit, then we will be stuck with an offensive lemon.  He can't hurt us offensively if he isn't playing and making outs.......and he has earned the bench just as Young has earned his job.

There might be some opportunity here too.  The Mets suspended Matt Harvey for three days for violating team  rules, whatever that meant, and it's the second time he has been suspended by that team.  In point of fact, rumors are rife that they want to and will trade Matt if a good offer came along.  This could be a chance for us to hit something big while the Mets get h elped out.  Perhaps a new venue for Bradley would get him our of the strangling pressure of Boston to a team that has needed a young and talented center fielder for some time.  We could get a solid starting pitcher, one from Connecticut who might like to come back to New England.  We could package Bradley, Little Marco, Barnes and a decent prospect (not great buyt decent) for Harvey and perhaps one of their relievers.  It is certainly worth a look.

Matt Harvey has not been the same since his Tommy John surgery.

My children are METS fans - and Matt Harvey has some attitude issues as well.
NOT sure I would want his attitude in our clubhouse.
Just my two cents worth!

I've heard of those problems with Harvey and the Mets.  We've had the same problems with some of our guys as well.  It happens.  I'm more concerned about his effectiveness since he had TJ surgery as his ERA has climbed precipitously since t hat operation.  However, there has been records of players getting a new lease on life when moving to another team.  I think it might be worth the gamble since we need another good starting pitcher and what we have at Triple AAA right now would qualify as dog s@#t.  Where the hell have you been---on STFU with those pollyannas?  I post there myself but very rarely.

The one really good thing this season with the Sox is the clubhouse has been very good from all the reports from the media here. Getting a guy like Harvey would IMHO be detrimental to this team.Plus he has been pitching well below average.Yeah, there have been guys who got better with a team change but I think there have been as much if not more who don't.If our AAA team had guys who could help out in the OF when JBJ goes then fine. They have nothing who could help once Young starts to not hit RHP. I also really believe the Mets would want more than what was suggested. Not too many teams right now seeing how pathetic JBJ is at the plate would offer anything of use.The guy in his career had a very good 30-40 days last season and that's about all the guy has to show since being a starter. The problem with teams is when a guy has a good season or part of a season they think he has turned the corner. We have all seen that in MLB that is far from the case. Every team wanted EE from Toronto last year.He got a 60 mil deal for 3 years and has been terrible som far.Such is the life of being a MLB player.

Fun game.  I had been out most of the day, keeping tabs on the radio.  Came back to settle in and watch the last couple of innings.  Dozed off a little and we were coming to bat in a close game in the 9th!  Watched us score a couple of runs, dozed off and woke up a half hour later and we were still batting!

Let's see if they can keep this rolling.  NL park tonight so pitchers will be hitting.

Sorry to hear about your father.  My tear duct surgery was postponed because my doctor's mother passed away.  I lost both my parents, one in 2002 and one in 1969.  It is a tough grind but you will get over it.  Stay strong.
