Good article in MassLive about the pitching mess.

Lack of starting pitching depth was preventable for Red Sox

This Campbell guy is a freaking disaster.  Don't know where he came from but he makes Brasier look like an ace.  You can't just lob in flat 85 mph pitches down the middle of the plate.

Then this defense.  The O's announcers have been shocked at how bad the defense is.  It was 13 in 12 games going into last night.  I think they said all the regular position players have an error.  Plus defensive screw ups like missed balls or not tagging the bag.  These guys are worse defensively that last year's team.

The offense still has some work to do but I'm hopeful that will come along as there appears to be talent (someone tell Rafeala he's not required to swing at every pitch though!).

Of course the starting pitching is an injury away from total disaster. They have no starting pitching depth whatsoever.

Tonight they have a chance to right the ship with the Angels back in town.  But we'll see if they can pull it off.

Quote from: SeaBeachFred on April 10, 2024, 03:09:16 PMI like hearing good news Sea Dog and hopefully the report is accurate.  One thing that does upset me is that Alex Cora is going to platoon the double play combination, the heart of the defense for teams, and to me that is insane.  He needs to pick his poison and go with it hoping for the best.  Valdez is early; he needs to be sent down, DFA's or released and one of the two "shortstops", and I use that term very loosely, moves to second base.

Hopefully we recover from our downer yesterday and play better baseball, get solid pitching and hit when it counts to get us a win tonight.  The O's are a solid team and we need to show them that we can stand with them and prevail.
I've never seen a professional 2B'man as bad at handling routine throws to him as Valdez. I never got to see "Dr Strange Glove" play as he was well before my time, but it's what I imagine it to be like.

I'm surprised there has not been a DFA yet, or even a project for project trade. That said, we might be seeing him again sooner than later if these injuries keep happening.

The Sox are getting fantastic pitching, but who in the bullpen does Cora truyst?  I think it all boils down to not spending for a top of the rotation pitcher, thereby plugging in the rotation with one or two of your bullpen mainstays.  Did Kennedy try to explain this logic?  I can't remember.  An old maxim applies to the Boston FO, "when you tell the truth, you don't have to remember what you said."

I think that the plan all along was Story at SS and Grissom at 2B.  I believe Grissom is coming back soon but may need time to get up to speed.  But for now he has to figure out who is going to work out there.  I like that for the most part he's kept the rest of the lineup pretty consistent.  Not sure if it's due to the total lack of depth but I especially like seeing a set outfield (which can change if they move Rafeala to SS).

This guy Campbell decided if he could throw some soft pitches in the heart of the plate that he could get major league hitters out.  What a disaster.  I was shocked they left him in.  Then the meltdowns between Martin and Wong just gave the game away.

Don't know what to make of these guys just yet.  ESPN had them #9 in their power rankings.  It seems like they have a better rotation then I expected, the bullpen has some real holes. Offense is hit or miss, but I'd like to hope that they get it going and it is still early in the season.  Funny to have a "must-win" game this early!
