Need a big(ger) game from Schwarber. He's come up big in the playoffs before (Cubs).  In the Friday game he was leadoff, went hitless and struck out three times.  He did draw a walk in the 1st and came around to score.

Yeah, it's a shame Schwarber and Dalbec went cold at the same time. Hopefully one of them snaps out of the slump.

Schwarber definitely runs hot and cold but doesn't seem to stay cold long.  It's just funny that he goes from hitting everything to missing everything and it turns either way on a dime.  Let's hope he can join the hit parade.

Rays seem to have shaken up their lineup a little today.

Nate Eovaldi pitches better at home than on the road the past couple of seasons and he is coming off a solid  effort in that satisfying win over the Yankees last Tuesday.  A good move is letting Plawecki catch him because he handles Nathan better than Vazquez does, and am I alone in believing that most of the time Christian does not call a good game from behind the dish?

That's a chance of having to face Arozerna one less time than normal. I'll take it, though having Meadows to deal with all day might not be a lesser evil.

Sox putting up a fight. I just wish JDM would stop swinging at crap. Could have used another run or two there. Of course right before he K'd they showed the stats about how well he does with RISP. The hex was on.

A week or so ago Eck was talking about what a good eye Schwarber has. "If he doesn't swing, it was a ball." That's BS. He just K'd after watching two strikes go by. Last one was right over the plate.

A lot of missed opportunities.  It feels like they should have score a few more runs and now they’re clinging to a one run lead.

Raffy must be too stubborn to learn. He keeps swinging as hard as he can and he keeps hurting that arm. And then all he gets is a dribble to the mound.

That was their big chance last inning, but now with a lucky bounce they have a new lease on life.  But now they’re back to hacking.

The idiotic announcer Vasgersian clearly didn’t understand the idea of a ground rule double.

Was a very good outing for the pitching staff as a whole. Eovaldi did his job and the pen only gave up 2 runs in 8innings. Pivetta was excellent to say the least. I can't ask for much more.

Gotta tip the hat to Cash for not letting the game get out of hand. I know they didn't have their preferred guns in the 9th, but his use of closers in the early innings reversed the 'Sox hot streak and stayed in the game long enough. A gutsy call, for sure, but it worked and they were almost rewarded.

Sp, the irony of Renfroe's play in RF off KK's bat is classic. He has zero coordination corralling a ball beneath his waste. We've seen it almost all year, as early as that Toronto series in Florida. So this time it happens and it saves a run. In a sense, it may have saved a season.

I don't know how we talk Devers into taming himself when his field-mate XB does not do it himself. Perhaps they should do this together. Kind of like a quit smoking pact.

Fantastic Sox win.  Once again Matt Vasgerian  proves himself to be the worst play by play guy in baseball and a complete fool.

You would think somebody would have said something in his ear. From the umpires after the game.
"“It's item 20 in the manual, which is, balls deflected out of play, which is in reference to official baseball Rule 5.06(b)(4)(H). It says, ‘If a fair ball not in flight is deflected by a fielder and goes out of play, the award is two bases from the time of the pitch.’”"
I'm guessing he was mixing up the rule book and moshing together some sort of throwing error or fan interference type of thing. Somewhere there is a ruling where the umps get to decide a base-runner's fate. It's not a ground rule double, though.

The part I did not know in real time was that the ruling of ground rule double stood if the umpire deems it as unintentional. I'm pretty sure we've seen one go off a glove into the seats near the Pesky Pole, though. All very interesting in a nerdy way.

There are maybe a dozen or more key moments to cherish in this great Sox win.  One that I will remember that was not so critical, but more fluff, was Schwarber making a smooth play behind 1B and tossing to Nathan for the out.  Then applauding himself to the crowd for the play.  That was after he threw the ball over Nathan's head on an earlier play at 1B.  The guy could help to rally the Sox in a future game with his leadership.  Apparently he has already helped Dalbec in batting.

The difference between a ball going off the glove and into the stands and this play is it hit the wall, which is the same as hitting the ground, and then hit the ground too.  It's also technically not a ground rule double because those are park specific.  This is a baseball rule.

Vasgersian sounded as dumb as he and A-Rod both did a couple of weeks ago when they didn't understand the relief pitching rules.

Over the years I have seen many variations of that play down the right field line where the ball hits off the players glove hits the ground and then bounces into the stands or hits the ground bounces off the player into the stands.  It isn't as rare as clueless Vergersian makes out.

A fantastic game in all respects, and what a starting point for many new baseball fans.  But alas, the networks (Fox) took it on themselves to drop the coverage before the epic moments even started.  Coverage was transferred to MLB Network.  So subscribers at least got to see the great drama.  But unfortunately only a limited number of new fans got to see all that.

ESPN doubles down on their erroneous reporting:

"Had the ball not bounced over the fence, Diaz would have easily scored. Instead, crew chief Sam Holbrook called the umpires back toward the infield and they made a decision: the ball would be ruled a ground-rule double and Diaz would need to return to third base. "

They make it sound like it was a subjective decision and that following the rules was a choice they could have made.

You're right, Ted, the whole game was on MLB.  So that says all the 'new fans' missed it, unless they were MLB subscribers, or had Uzzu, Bilasport, others to get the feed.

ESPN - pffffttttttt!!!  That's the same site that reported on one of the Red Sox - Yankees bench clearing dust-ups by publishing their Yankees writers account that basically stated - 'In the end, it was the Yankees standing tall and walking around a "sea of Red Sox bodies" laying on the ground.'

The "sea of Red Sox bodies" part is what I remember for sure, but I'm not far off on the rest. I think it was the Joe Kelly fight, though it might have been Brasier.

ESPN has not mattered in a long time for me.

ESPN is a joke.  I make it a habit not to watch unless I absolutely have to such as when they exclusively broadcast a Red Sox game.  Fortunately most sports critics notice how awful ESPN baseball coverage has become.

The game was on MLB, as scheduled and advertised, from start to finish.  Nobody dropped coverage.

You're right, Ted, the whole game was on MLB.  So that says all the 'new fans' missed it, unless they were MLB subscribers, or had Uzzu, Bilasport, others to get the feed.

Gotcha, I don't even know that it was on the MLB web feed now that I think of it as a friend mentioned he was watching it on Gamecast.

No matter how you decide to slice or dice it yesterday's game was a classic of sorts and this time  the fates were in our corner.  Remember though we have to win another game to clinch the series and it would be a good idea to get it at home.  As for ESPN anyone with any grey matter knows for whatever reason that station is so pr o-Yankees that it is sickening to even watch that miserable channel.  As it is they may wind up going the way of CNN, the biggest dirt ball station of them all.  Still we did get the best of ESPN yesterday and last Tuesday when their Yankees went down to our  team.  Fortunately for me I saw the game on MLB so I avoided ESPN's bias, though, to e honest, I had two TV's going o n at the same time.   One room has the Browns-Chargers game, the other the Red Sox-Ray one. A  nice Sunday it was for me the way both games turned out.  A similar en ding today would be most appreciated.
