There was a stat on Quick Pitch this AM that Schwarber leads all of MLB this year in home runs as the leadoff batter. (8) For Wash. and Boston.
Serious pitcher's duel here. Sox with just one hit. Or maybe two now.
Why did Cora pull Houck? Makes no sense given the overall situation.
Allowing the steal of third, brain dead pitcher.

No frigging clue. Maddening. It's like someone praying for a lottery win and not buying a ticket. UFB!!! Can't develop a 6 inning guy without giving him a chance at it more than once or twice. hell, we're lucky he got into the 5th with cora.
Houck had 68 pitches and was doing fine. WTF? Now they're on the verge of giving up a run or two. And with the Sox bats as quiet as they've been, it's not looking good.
O's somehow beat the Yanks and the A's are losing in the 8th, so the Sox can gain on both here. But at least they won't lose ground if this game goes south.
Whew, out of it. Very lucky there. Although Robles looks hurt.
Pulling Houck was a typical brain dead stupid move. Management by slavish following programmed sabermetrics without taking into account the total situation. Davis has to be pulled from the game after loading the bases.
Morgan finally gone. Maybe the Sox can do something now.
Or not.
Valdez with a good inning.
Finally a clutch hit. Raffy with a 3-run dinger.
Great at bat by Schwarber then Devers.!
And Raffy could be our SS next week. He's everywhere. thumb_u
Btw I do not know how anyone can bat against Blake Parker with laughing at his funky delivery.
Valdez with another great inning.
Ugh. Ottavino not doing well here.
Damn you, Alex Speier. You had to show that graphic about how Ottavino hadn't given up a homer in ages and two seconds later, boom.
Everybody in ballpark knew O was going to throw a slider.
Taylor Motter???
How about a clutch hit, JD?
Hmm, that was unexpected. Ok, Verdugo, on you now.
Wow, a clutch hit. Sox win. Half game back of NYY and 4 up on OAK in the WC.
Super win. This team does have heart after all. Different ball club since Sale and Schwarber arrived.
That was fun. Ottavino made it a little too fun, but all´s well that ends well.
Houck was pulled because third time through for some reason is like a switch goes off for this kid. Probably not bad to get him out with no runs.

THEY ANNOUNCE THAT OTTOVINO HASN'T GIVEN UP A HOM ER IN EONS AND THE NEXT PITCH SAILS OUT OF THE PARK AND WE'RE TIED. FOR SOME REASON I KEPT THE FAITH AND VERDUGO CAME BACK. IT WAS ANOTHER GREAT WIN AND MAYBE, I SAID MAYBE, WE ARE STARTING TO COOK AGAIN. LET'S KEEP IT GOING NOW, NO MORE FALLBACKS. WE MIGHT YET GET TO THE PLAYOFFS. AS FOR CORA, THERE ARE THOSE ANALYTICS ABOUT A THIRD TIME THROUGH THE LINEUP AND I GUESS WE ALL JUST HAVE TO BE PISSED OFF AND ACCEPT IT- A WIN LIKE THIS MAKES THAT ORDEAL EASIER TO STOMACH.

The bit about third time through the order is based on a very small sample. Moreover unless he faces the order three times it becomes a self-for-filling prophecy. Finally he certainly could not have done much worse than Davis.

This is absolutely correct. He messed up the last time, was in better shape to do it this time. Add to it that Houck surely had worked it through in his mind already. How he felt last week, how he should have felt and made corrections - which included challenging hitters instead of walking them so that he could go another inning. Nope, I totally agree. Poor move. Give him enough rope to be able to climb and he'll start doing so. This is the saem team that would not let him get past the 4th not long ago.
Red Sox Management know nothing at all about developing starting pitchers. This is an embarassing joke.
Good for Verdugo, Devers, et all for gutting it out. And for the first time ever, I am impressed with Arauze for doing some ball playing today. At least with the bunts and a play or two recently out in the field. Kudos!
With an eye on the playoffs, the Sox have to be lining up a minimum of three pitchers. Behind Sale and Nathan, Houck has to be in line IMO. In his next couple starts they need to give the kid some bravado and let him fight through tough innings with men on base.

I think your point about the club's repeated failure at developing pitchers is telling. The height of stupidity is to do the same thing over and over again and to expect different results.

SCARY thoughts !!! iono iono iono rofl rofl
With Houck you elk is right, you can’t keep throwing him out there and expect him to all of a sudden not lose it the third time through. Maybe building some confidence first and not let him get pulled under duress every time.
My youngest daughter is now an experience equestrian.and she jumps horses. When she was first learning to ride she fell off her horse. But she got right back on. My fourth daughter is an very experience gymnastic coach. When she was competing she fell off the balance beam. She eventually won a state championship on the beam. The point is you can only learn from failure if you try again. Never trying is a form of preemptive capitulation. To never try means you always admit defeat.
