BOSTON, (85-64)........................................................................................BALTIMORE, (73-77)
BOSTON:
DOUG FISTER, RHP, 5/8, 4.40 ERA, 69K
Fister hit a bump in the road against Oakland, giving up six runs over
four innings in his last start. Before that, he had thrown seven innings in
four straight starts, giving up five runs total in that span (a-1.50 ERA).
BALTIMORE:
DYLAN BUNDY, RHP, 13-9, 4.03 ERA, 150K
The righty struck out eight across six frames of one-run ball Tuesday,
taking a no-decision in the Orioles loss to the Blue Jays.
Sox look to tighten East grip behind Fister
Brittany Ghiroli
Doug Fister will try to put his first-inning ghosts behind him as the righty and the American League East-leading Red Sox embark on a key three-game series that they hope will put further distance between them and the Yankees.
Boston heads into Monday's three-game series with Baltimore, which has lost eight of its last 10, with a three-game lead in the division over New York.
Fister has posted a 4.00 second-half ERA, after recording a 6.14 mark in the first half. But he allowed four runs in the first inning on Wednesday night against the A's, lasting just four innings and giving up six runs total. His first-inning ERA this season is now 9.75, and Fister knows teams will try to get to him early.
"I have nothing to explain. I really have no idea," he said Wednesday. "I go out there with the same mentality, the same approach, first inning, last inning, it doesn't matter. It's one of those things, I guess I need to start kicking myself in the shins and being ready in the bullpen and just kind of get mad from the get-go. So I've got to figure that out for myself."
The Orioles will counter with Dylan Bundy, who is coming off a fantastic start. The righty struck out eight across six frames of one-run ball Tuesday, taking a no-decision in the Orioles' loss to the Blue Jays. Bundy will face a Red Sox offense that has averaged six runs per game over its past 10 games.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME
• Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia is slated to be back on the field for the Baltimore series. Pedroia served as the designated hitter on Sunday to keep him off the Tropicana Field turf.
• Fister went seven innings against Baltimore on Aug. 27, holding the O's to five hits and two runs despite taking the loss.
• Bundy will be pitching on extra rest, which the O's have done to stretch out his starts in his first full year as a starter.

Those first inning problems have me a little concerned Bill, but when Doug has been right he has pitched terrific baseball for us. I hope we get the good Fister tonight because we need a top notch performance against a team that seems to love to play us and give the Red Sox a bad time. Hope Mookie is back too because, off season or not, we need him in the final two weeks.
Betts claims he will play tonite.

Fred, I sure hope it's an offseason fro Mookie or last season was one not to be seen again. As usual and in all sports when a player comes out of nowhere with a monster season he is dubbed a superstar. Coming into this year he was listed right below Trout which was actually funny to see. I see him being a possible .290 plus hitter but not a 30 plus HR guy.
Sox need to have Raffy work on his defense over the winter. I realize he is young but 35-40 Es in a season has to come down. That's the pace he is on between the minors and the Sox.
Counting tonight's game, we have 13 games left.

Oh boy. Crunch time indeed. I don't know what to expect with Fister tonight. He's like Wakefield, except with a sinker ball. Either on or off. The bats have to pounce early - again, something that's a tall order.
Here we go:
1. Xander Bogaerts (R) SS
2. Dustin Pedroia (R) 2B
3. Andrew Benintendi (L) LF
4. Mookie Betts (R) RF
5. Mitch Moreland (L) 1B
6. Christian Vazquez (R) DH
7. Rafael Devers (L) 3B
8. Sandy Leon (S) C
9. Jackie Bradley Jr. (L) CF
Interesting to see Vaz as the DH.

I'm starting to wonder Rob if the ailments Mookie suddenly said he'd been suffering for two months could be a cause of his less than stellar season (for him anyway) that he's having this year. He said yesterday that he has not been right for two months. If so I feel like a fool for getting on him the way I did last week. You can't play this game hurt. A shoulder, thumb, hand and leg can lessen a player's hitting prowess and that may be the case with Betts. Personally I think he is better than he has shown but perhaps not as stalwart as he was last season. I can see him being a 305-310 hitter with about 25 homers and 30 stolen bases. If he plays the defense he plays that's plenty good for me. As for Devers, maybe DH is in his future. We do have a young MIchael Chavis who had a big year this season down in the minors and he is a pretty good fielding third baseman and a right handed power hitter. Possible we could get both in the lineup down the road with Travis finall put on first base for a long long look. That will play itself out one way or another Rob. Right now I am concerned about this series with the O's. The swept us in Boston their last go-round with us and I would love to win this series to show them we can beat them too.

Interesting to see Vaz as the DH.
Can use Vaz now as a DH because the Sox have Swihart as a 3rd catcher. Gives a lot more flexibility to use Vaz.
So give up a run in the first, Yankees of course went up a run in the first. I've seen this movie before. Nice job of Fister to start off with a double this inning. Meanwhile Gary Thorne on MASN said it well on Betts strike out - "Strike three on what was almost a swing". That's the story of the Red Sox batters this year - weakly swing and try to get a slow roller.
Also, Bogey leads off and I wasn't sure, was it the first pitch or second that he swung at? Doesn't the #1 batter usually try to see more pitches? Fister thew more to the first batter than the Sox saw in the top of the first.
3-0 and looking for more .GET THE DAMN PEN UP QUICK BEFORE IT GETS OUT OF REACH.
Freaking house of horrors. The inspired at bats of the Red Sox give me hope. How does the first place team look like the one that's playing out the next two weeks before they can play golf?
Have to take advantage here. Oh well, nope, another lazy fly ball.
Devers looks like he hurt his shoulder on the 1st inning dive to catch the jbj over throw. keeps moving it around.
Another Fister dud. This could get real ugly.
THIS game is OVER.
4 - 0
Bases loaded, no outs in the bottom of the third.
Fister out - Hembree in (OH MY.)
Have to root for the Twins tonight.
Heard a stat that says that Fister has an era over 9
in the first two innings
and USUALLY an era of only 1.5 or so in innings AFTER.
Unfortunately, not tonight.
5 - 0
on a sac fly.
NOW, bases loaded again.
ONLY one out . . .
Just don't understand it -
the Yankees feast on Orioles pitchers.
NOT us.
Much needed DP. Hembree limits the damage. Wel done.

Pedroia finds a new way to hurt himself.
Trying for the comeback. 6-4 now.
Holt comes in for Pedroia and immediately adds a spark to the offense. Sox making a game of this now.
Mookie drives in 3. Sox up 7-6. Gotta like it.
OMG -
Sox are leading 7 - 6 in the top of the 5th inning.
Mookie just gave us a lifeline after pitching clowns Fister and Hembree came back to earth.
Can our pen hold this lead????
Yeah Fister is back to being Fister.
But lets not forget what he did when we needed him the most.Without him stepping up there is no way we are where we at .NO WAY SOX ARE IN 1ST WITHOUT THE GOOD FISTER OF THE LAST 5 or 6 WEEKS.
Abad can toss a filthy curve sometimes.

One to many times for that off speed pitch. That's what happens when you get behind in the count. I didn't think the scoring from either side was over.
Devers continues to have problems at 3B. That should have been an easy out.

Next years DH.
Then Benintendi follows up with a missed catch and costs them a run.
Devers needs to atone here.
DANG IT -
Orioles 8 - Sox 7.
C'mon SOX!
You climbed back from a 5 - 1 hole, 6 - 1 hole,
NOW climb back from an 8 - 7 hole.
Xander hits a solo shot to start the top of the 7th inning.
Tie game.
Sox 8 - Orioles 8
C'mon SOX!!!!
Nice to see a little bit of power from XB.
Nice throw by JBJ. Needed that.
Yeah, it was. Nice grab and tag by XB.
Unfortunately, the Yankees won 2 -1 over the Twins.
UGHHHHHH

Twins had a shot in the 8th with bases loaded and 1 out and didn't score. Sounds familiar.
XB's HR notwithstanding, Sox are missing about 5% of the power they need to get the ball out of the park. I believe you've called that Warning Track Power, Geo. Getting old.

Playing in the wrong park tonight. In Fenway that would of been a wall ball I think but not in Camden Yard. About 350 feet in Camden Yard where Moreland hit it and about 330 in Fenway.
Sweet. Hopefully 2 runs is enough.
A seeing eye base hit by Benintendi puts the Sox up by 2 runs. Just out of the reach of the 2nd baseman.
Carson Smith time. Let's get it done.
One more.
Almost pure Red Sox fans in the stands there.
Gutsy win. I'll take it.
Sox WIN!
10 - 8 in the 11th inning.
AMAZING!

SO GLAD that I was wrong hours ago.
THIS team never quits.
WOW!!
Matt Barnes with the win. Carson Smith with the save. Team persevered and got it done. On to Tuesday.
Talk about a HUGE win. They drive us nuts but a team with little power they sure scrstch and claw to get the big W.
Excellent job by Carson Smith.
Bullpen only gave up 2 earned runs in 9 innings. The other run was because of errors. They have been excellent in extra inning games.
Fred, Xman saved the day by tying the game...How'd that happen?
This was another one of those games; so happy it turned out the
way it did.
Pedroia has a nasal contusion and is day/day. For a little guy, he surely
does find ways to hurt himself.
:P take that Showalter.

14-3 in extras. I guess that's one thing they're pretty darn good at. :)

That was key to this game. They can be on, or they can stink, but mostly they've been on. I really thought though that these guys were just going through the motions early on.
Loved Mark's comment about Pedey finding new ways to get hurt. It's so true!
Just read an article this morning that MLB is on a record pace for HR's this year and probably broke the record as of last night. The Sox certainly aren't contributing to that, but at the same time they're not striking out at a record pace like everyone else too.

Confession Bear....I went to bed in the eighth inning because I was just plain bushed. I hoped for the best and you got us that win I asked for. What do make of our team? Personally I still can't figure them out. They looked so inept early on but, give them credit, when they put their mind to it they don't quit. Disappointed in Fister again and wonder if he is back to his old haunts, and Pedroia hurt again. Man, can't that guy stay healthy. Hope it is only for a game or two because we need him in that lineup. Bogaerts came through big time and that was pleasing to see. I caught Benny's see and eye hit (thank God it got through) on the reviews this morning. Wow!!!! I was a good win but I have to think it takes a lot out of my colleagues as it does me. I noticed a few of my friends post some pretty terse comments early on. The nature of the beast when you root for the Red Sox, but as mark said, A WIN, AND I'LL TAKE IT.
