RED SOX V YANKEES

THURSDAY, JUNE 8, 2017, 7 PM AT YANKEE STADIUM

TV:  NESN, ESPN, YES

BOSTON, (32-26)...............................................................................NEW YORK, ( 33-23)

BOSTON:

DAVID PRICE, LHP, 1-0, 3.00 ERA, 11K

The lefty makes his third start since returning from the disabled list.  Price
struggled mightily against the Yankees last season, going 1-3 with a 7.89 ERA
in five starts.  In his career at Yankee Stadium, he is 8-5 with a 3.98 ERA.

NEW YORK:

MICHAEL PINEDA, RHP, 6-3, 3.76 ERA, 67K

Pineda has been one of the yank's better starters, but turned in a
clunky last time out vs Toronto, allowing five runs and 10 hits over five
frames.  Prior to that, Pineda had a string of nine starts with e earned
runs of fewer allowed.

Price vs. Pineda closes set for AL East's top 2

Matthew Mattell

The Yankees and the Red Sox currently sit first and second in the American League East, adding fuel to what's already one of the most heated rivalries in all of professional sports.

Making Thursday's matchup even more intense is the Yankees will be facing Red Sox left-hander David Price (1-0), who has been sharp in his first two outings since returning from the disabled list at the end of May. Michael Pineda (6-3) will start for the Yankees.

"David Price's addition is going to be a bonus to any rotation. We know that," manager John Farrell said. "But the fact that he was able to get into the eighth inning in his second start, that was really encouraging."

Price dominated in his most recent outing on the road against the Orioles, which came on Saturday, when he tossed seven-plus innings of one-run, three-hit ball with seven strikeouts. The lone blemish came in the seventh when Manny Machado took him deep for a home run.

Despite his lifetime winning record in the Bronx, Price went 0-3 with an 8.10 ERA in three starts at Yankee Stadium last season. Overall against the Yankees in 2016, he was 1-3 with a 7.89 ERA in five starts.

Pineda is coming off his worst outing since his first start of the season. Against the Blue Jays on Friday, the 28-year-old allowed five runs and 10 hits, both of which were season highs.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• Pineda has thrown one-third of his pitches while ahead in the count, the fifth-highest rate for anyone with at least 1,000 pitches this season. When he's been ahead, opponents have posted just an 84.6-mph average exit velocity and a .166 expected batting average (based on Statcast hit probabilities).

• Switch-hitter Chase Headley, who has struggled this season from the right side, is 11-for-33 (.333) lifetime against Price with three extra-base hits.

• Right fielder Mookie Betts is 6-for-20 (.300) lifetime against Pineda with two doubles and two home runs.

• Price has an 8-5 career record at Yankee Stadium, though his 3.98 ERA is his third-worst mark at any AL ballpark.

It would be sooooo good to depart  N Y with a take of the series 2-1 .....  Go SOX, make us proud !! thumb_u iono

Hmmm, let's see what the Sox can do with the 5-6 hits they're gonna get.  Price is on shutout alert.

Would be great to win 2 but I figured the Sox would win 1 which keeps them right in the race. Hard to win 2 in NY. Hopefully the Sox can get that 2nd win.

Two infield hits and a walk in the 1st and nothing to show for it. Hopefully Price is on tonight.

Betts and JBJ decide not to catch the ball. Looked like Betts had the best chance. Don't think it was called by either guy since they didn't know if they could catch it.

Yanks have a lot of players who can hit it out. Make a bad pitch and it's gone.

markj

Yanks aren't done scoring yet. This could get ugly.

I said it when they signed Price and will continue to say it - this signing will be three or more years of totally dead money. Last season he was a very good, but not a great pitcher.  This season will probably be similar - I go for something like 10-10, 4.00.

The Yankees simply pound away.  Freaking Hicks is .100 points above his career average. Sanchez has taken a strp back except when Boston shows up.  Gardner would hit #4 in Boston.

There - I feel better! sigh

Maybe Price will opt out after next season. The drawback is if he's pitching well he'll opt out and if he's not he won't.

markj

Not the best series for Red Sox pitching. Back-to-back 8-run games. Oof.

markj

This will not end up as an 8-run game. Will be lucky if it doesn't go 12.

Maybe Diva "Not Worth The" Price will talk to reporters tonight.  I bet he felt good....  sigh

This team can be so disappointing the way they wilt against anyone who can throw a strike or two.  The no pop offense just keeps slithering along.
