Title: GAME #108, CLEVELAND INDIANS AT BOSTON RED SOX
Post by: Bear on August 01, 2017, 01:46:46 AM
INDIANS V RED SOX

TUESDAY, AUGUST 1, 2017, 7 PM AT FENWAY PARK

TV:  NESN, MLBN, (OUT-OF-MARKET ONLY), SPORTS TIME OHIO

CLEVELAND, (57-47).......................................................................................BOSTON, (58-49)

CLEVELAND:

CARLOS CARRASCO, RHP, 10-4, 3.58 ERA, 105K

Carrasco held the Angels to two runs over 6 1/3 innings on Wednesday, striking out
five and walking none.  The big right-hander is 7-2 with a 2.87 ERA in 11 starts this year.

BOSTON:

CHRIS SALE, LHP, 13-4, 2.37 ERA, 211K

The Red Sox ace produced a gem in his last outing, striking out 11 and allowing three
hits in seven scoreless innings against the Mariners.  Sale leads the Majors with 211 strikeouts.
The left-hander has not allowed a run in his last three starts.

Carrasco, Sale duel as Tribe battles Red Sox

Evan Chronis

Carlos Carrasco and the Indians will be reunited with an old foe Tuesday night when former American League Central rival Chris Sale takes the mound for the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Sale (13-4, 2.37 ERA), who played for the White Sox from 2010-16, holds a 5-7 record with a 4.07 ERA in 27 career appearances (16 starts) against Cleveland.

Indians starter Carlos Carrasco (10-4, 3.58 ERA) has some history with Sale. The right-hander, who has been with the Indians since 2009, has opposed Sale twice in his career -- the first coming in 2014 and the second in '15. Sale came out the victor in both matchups, due mostly in part from Carrasco not being able to make it through five innings in either game.

Early in his White Sox career, Sale appeared as a reliever in two games started by Carrasco.

Carrasco is in as good a position as ever to take one from Sale, as the right-hander is enjoying what could end up as a career year. He leads the Indians in wins, however he hasn't earned a win since July 7. In his last outing, Carrasco got a no-decision after holding the Angels to six hits and two runs in 6 1/3 innings. He is 1-1 with a 4.66 ERA in five career appearances against the Red Sox.

Sale, meanwhile, is arguably on his hottest streak of the season, twirling three scoreless starts since the All-Star break. His scoreless streak of 20 2/3 innings is currently the longest in the Majors.

As for his first season in Boston, the All-Star has already etched his name into the Red Sox's record books. Sale is the second Red Sox pitcher with 14 or more double-digit strikeout games in a season. Pedro Martinez achieved the mark twice while with Boston.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• Sale is striking out batters at a meteoric level. His 211 whiffs heading into August are the most for any pitcher entering the month since 2002, when Randy Johnson had 215 and Curt Schilling had 212.

• Sale's 21.4-percent called-strike rate in July was his highest for any month this season, by more than 3 percentage points. It also ranked third among pitchers with at least 400 total pitches in July.

• Carrasco has been close to lights-out away from Progressive Field this season. The righty is 7-2 in 11 road starts, and his 2.87 ERA on the road is the sixth-lowest in the AL.

Carrasco having a good season.  Sale will have to be really on his game.  Our scratch ticket offense will be the factor again.  What else is new?

Nevertheless, the best thing about this season is watching Sale do his thing.  Must see games.

That was a nice win and a real surprise from Fister last night.  Let's this time do it right and continue to play another good ball game.  Go out and give Sale some hitting support; do NOT starve him for runs.  We need this game tonight with our ace on the mound---please let's not waste another probable great effort by our ace.  Going away for the day with my wife Linda.  You guys hold the fort and keep the good thoughts coming and I'll try to throw out some positive vibes of my own.  Go Xander and have a great game tonight.  I'l be pulling for you.

Watching the game on MLB TV channel (Can't take any more of the Gomes O'Brien Combo)  But Jim Kaat and Bob Costas just ripped David Price as did Tom Verducci.  Apparently RedSox put Eckersley exploits on the Jumbo Tron at Fenway during the half inning with Eck in the club house suite.  Eck got a huge ovation.  Price had retreated into the clubhouse before the Eck tribute went on the scoreboard.  Once again Price ridiculed by national media over this kerfuffle.

UNBELIEVABLE WIN!

Chris Sale pitched VERY unSale like.
And yet, the Red Sox bats, for once, had his back.
(Yet 7 runs allowed - UGH)
Craig Kimbrel allows 2 runs.

AND the Sox come back with 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning.

Sox 12 - Indians 10.

WOW!
And the Yankees lost, Sox back in first place.

CRAZY and AMAZING.

What a day markj.  Thank you for that post; it means a lot to me.  What a game baseball is, huh?  I mean last night we had a "stiff" pitching for us and what happens?  He pitches a gem and we win.   Today we have our ace and arguably the best pitcher in the league and what happens?  He gets ripped through and through, but so does the Cleveland starter Carrasco and his 10-4 record.  Yes, I missed just about the whole game except for, GUESS WHAT?  The last batter which happened to be Christian Vaszuez.  Is that weird or not?  And I'm saying down by two well the day can't be perfect and what happens??? HE HITS A THREE RUN BOMB AND WE WIN 12-10.  What a day this was.  Man I cannot believe it.  You guys must have had a field day watching all those hits and runs, though I would think looking at the box score that there was a lot of nervous stomachs throughout.  Well it turned out to be a great day for Linda and me.  47th Anniversary and the Red Sox win dramatically, the Yankees lost and the Cubs are killing their opponents.  I'm not going to get too high but is it possible we are starting to hit like we're supposed to?  Nunez and Devers sure are adding strength to the lineup and right at this moment it looks like we made some good pickups like other teams did---Devers and Nunez.  Can we just keep this up.....PUHLEEEZE???

I wish we could put this one to bed Elk.  We have gone up against the second hottest team in the game (the damn Dodgers) and have come off with two good victories, one very dramatic tonight. Is it possible the team just might be now coming together?  I'm still not sure but it looks better than it did a few days ago and with that we don't need any contretemps going on that might impact the team.  If I can now get behind Bogaerts even though he is still struggling we all need to get behind Davis Price, hope he gets his arm and elbow ready to help us going on because I really believe we will need him.

Now please Schloik, use your influence to tell Farrell NOT to use Barnes two days in a row.  He doesn't have to now with a deeper bullpen.  As I said earlier I only saw one at-bat tonight but it was a doozy, but what your take on Addison Reed?  I saw him with the Mets on TV a few times and he looked like had a lot of moxie out there on the mound.  Possible he could be an alternate closer for Kimbrel when one is needed and Craig has worked two games in a row?

Thanks Mark, it was a helluva anniversary present, but this win was for all of us because we're all in this together.  I will remember this for the rest of my days, though.  Of course, it can never be No. 1.  That came on my 64th Birthday on October 27, 2004 and I know you and the rest of my friends he remember what happened that night.

Wow what a game!  Don't you just love baseball!  The pitching disappears, the bats come out of nowhere!

Best game of the year.

I'll tell you this Ted----predicting how a game will turn out is a witches brew.  Just look at the last two nights for proof on that.  Who really knew?????

I can't find anything anywhere. Is AB benched, or is he just getting a mini-break like he did Bradley?

Playing the hot guy in Holt. As long as Holt is doing well play him.

Right Schloik---but with Bradley cold again it may be time for him to take a couple of days off, and what is the matter with Hanley?  When is he going to catch fire....or is he?

Hanley tried to catch fire tonight but was robbed of a HR by a great catch by Austin Jackson.  Might be the best catch I've seen this year. Hanley has had a rough post All-Star time. Hopefully he can break out of it soon. JBJ might need a little break so throw Beni out in center for a couple games to see if he breaks out.

Now that was different. Lots of offense and no pitching.I like the lineup the way it is.Holt looks good in the 2 slot.

Something happened in out half of the 1st that made me think that this was going to be one of those games.

Mookie was talking about forgetting how to relax and have fun with the game. We've been skawking about that for over a year. It should not take a year and a player to figure that out. This should have been prioritized and fixed a long time ago.

Vazquez's HR last night was different from his slump causing previous shot. He went up the middle. He stayed with his swing that has got him going again.

Anyone else noticing how many crooked numbered innings Devers has started when leading off? I know, small sample size. Points out nothing but what a bolt of energy does and how success using ones mechanics is part of the hitting becoming contagious thing.

I know we all have said it all along, but the line up needs to be long. Top to bottom. Never ending. No matter who is in there. 6th thru 9th. That is the only way this version of the sox win. I hope they all do not take on the constant HR swing thing again. They cannot live in the power zone. I hope this style continues. We fail if it does not. That simple.

JB looking very long in his swing again. Perhaps (whoever said it) was right - he's the next one for a spell.

oh no, please let's not lose this little advantage....
If we can just get started and be consistent... sigh

Speaking of throwing HR balls, how about that HR Edwin Encarcion hit last night? I don't recall eeing  pop up like that going so far back as to scrape the back signage on the way down like that. That wasn't even a moon shot. That was a 9-iron. Scary stuff.

But yes, tonight and .... maybe Tito will give Edwin the night off.   rofl   Boy, I kill me sometimes.

Still amazed at this game.  For once it was so enjoyable and I just had a feeling like they'd come back for some strange reason.

Weird stat they mentioned last night - Kimbrel has blown 4 saves, all on lead off HRs.

The Jackson catch was amazing.  I thought you had to land in fair ground but apparently not.  If there were runners, they would have been allowed one base.  I would think you'd allow them as many as they can get.

Both teams had their starters and two top relievers give up runs.  Amazing that they got to Miller and then to the closer.  Poor Reed had a rough start as a Sox but talk about a pickup.

The only thing I would say about Reed's bad start is all the best pitchers on both teams had a bad day last night.  Sandy Koufax. Bob Feller, Warren Spahn and Cy Young would have a bad time last night.  It was that bizarre a ball game.  The only thing missing was an unassisted triple play.

Should be Reed then Kimbrel coming up. Nice job Barnes.

I think Reed will be fine. He gave up the HR but that happens. (See Kimbrel) He can give Kimbrel a day off if it's a save situation but you have a 2-3 run lead. Kimbrel lately has been throwing to many pitches to get through innings. Might just need to scale back on him a little. When Kelly gets back you can have a pretty good end of game set up with Kelly, Reed & Kimbrel going in the 7th, 8th & 9th. (You can mix it up a little depending on the score.) I think the other night Barnes got down because Xman committed the error to start the inning and Barnes didn't recover. Workman has been decent and Boyer for the most part has done well. Even Abad has been ok. If the relievers can continue to do their jobs the Sox should be ok.

I look at the HR the same as if he Kd the side on 10 pitches .I t was 1 outing and doesn't mean much.
There is a WILD CARD in the pen group and it`s Carson Smith.   Smith is on track to face hitters on Thursday.  if all goes well he could begin a minor-league rehab assignment this weekend. He would slot into the 7th inning and all of sudden the BP looks very very good. Kimbrel then could be given a well needed day off with capable arms to help out.

Smith could move Barnes down to long relief.  Especially since Hembee is a little skittish of late.

Now we must put this good feeling aside and start hoping for some new positive vibes tonight.  Porcello?  Well they're throwing Bauer and he hasn't been too sharp lately either.  It would be real weird if instead of another slug fest tonight we  actually have a pitcher's duel.  Just the same I want our guys to be hitting up a storm as they did last night.  We had a very weak July so how about having an ideal August.  Good dramatic start last night but it would swell if Porcello would start resembling the pitcher who on the Cy Young last year.

That first part of your missive sure seems clear to me that the team needed a leader to move them into the 2017 season and mitigate as best they could the loss of David Ortiz.  It looks like no one stepped forward and maybe it could have been Mookie himself but he eliminated himself right away with his statement about relaxing.  Well who would have told him to relax and would he have listened.  Now, instead of some leader stepping forward, we have to depend on inspiration from the likes of an older veteran traded to us and a call-up prospect to lead offensively and get us going that way.  As I said last night, the next two weeks might just tell us if this team is ready to be taken seriously.  Last night the answer was year, but as great as it was, it was, after all, only one game.  A few more like that and we might get the answer we want.
