Title: GAME #100, BOSTON RED SOX AT LA ANGELS
Post by: Bear on July 23, 2017, 04:43:14 AM
RED SOX V ANGELS

SUNDAY, JULY 23, 2017, 3:30 PM AT ANGEL STADIUM

TV:  NESN, FS-W

BOSTON, (55-44)...................................................................................................ANAHEIM, (48-51)

BOSTON:

RICK PORCELLO, 4-12, 4.0 ERA, 115K

Porcello's slump has continued past the break as the righty leads the majors
in loses (12).   However, the numbers may be deceiving--he has four quality starts
in his past five outings and has gone at least six innings in seventeen straight starts.

ANAHEIM:

PARKER BRIDWELL, RHP, 3-1, 3.18 ERA, 27K

Bridwell allowed two runs over 6 1/3 innings and set a career high with eight
strikeouts against the Rays on Sunday.  The 25-year-old earned his second win of
the season against the Red Sox on June 25 after yielding two runs over 6 2/3 innings.

Porcello, Bridwell square off in rubber match

Rick Porcello, whose last win came against the Angels on June 23, will seek the same result Sunday when he faces off with young right-hander Parker Bridwell to conclude a three-game set at Angel Stadium.

Porcello (4-12, 4.60 ERA), the 2016 American League Cy Young Award winner, hasn't earned a win in his last four outings despite three straight quality starts, including his latest outing against the Yankees when he tossed six innings of three-run ball with no walks and six strikeouts.

Porcello has been on an impressive run of 17 straight games in which he's pitched at least six innings, the longest active streak in the Major Leagues.

Manager John Farrell praised the veteran's preparation, adding that the record doesn't accurately reflect how well he's pitched.

"He takes a lot of pride in working deep as most starters do, but he's been able to execute it," Farrell said. "It's been what, 17 or 18 consecutive starts with six innings or more? So while the run support for him might have a direct impact on the win-loss record, all the other numbers he put up a year ago are pretty darn close with what he's producing right now."

The Angels are 6-1 in games started by the 25-year-old Bridwell (3-1, 3.18 ERA) this season. He held the Rays to two runs on six hits over 6 1/3 innings with a career-high eight strikeouts in his last start.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• When he last faced the Angels, Porcello allowed four runs (three earned) over 6 1/3 innings, while striking out eight and walking one batter.

• Bridwell earned a win the last time he faced Boston, permitting two runs over a career-high 6 2/3 innings on June 25.

• Porcello has pitched at least six innings in 22 straight road starts. The stretch is the longest active streak in the Major Leagues and is the longest since Cliff Lee's 23-game streak across the 2012-13 seasons.

HR gets a solo dinger and we're up 2-1.

If it weren't for the solo dingers, Porcello would be doing great.  ::)

Porcello gives up 4 hits, but 3 of them dingers.  Our offense fulfills its inability to do a darn thing which is magnified when facing a good SP.

Same old refrain: Can't expect our starter to keep it to 2 ERs to bail out the 5 hit offense AGAIN.

Sox have 5 hits through 8 innings and 4 of them are from our bottom 3 hitters. The other is the Hanley hr. Won't win many that way. Need a 9th inning rally now.

Bottom 8 down 3-2 .Porcello actually pitching good only 5 hits but 3 HRs has him on the hook for a  loss.
Onto the 9th need a couple runs. Porcello after 8 only 96 pitches. 5 h   1bb   6 k .

Bogey DP ball ends it.
Rays lost and Yanks losing in the 6th.
At least Porcello continues to pitch better and give the weak bats a chance to get a W.

I hope those that want Devers  will get ready for Panda like defense. This young pup is BAD ON DEFENSE
16  ERRORS in 72 games. That's on pace for 40 plus ERRORS in a full season.Best place now for him is DH.

Errors are gonna happen, but I'd save the Panda-like D for a few weeks. There are differences between errors and mistakes and not being able to bend down for a simple back hand. You may very well be right and we may have to deal with a Wade Boggs defense for years. Let's hope he hits more homers and that Margot does have a younger sister.

There's no doubt he will hit homers and average. But it Will take time on D.

Bringing up Devers is almost like throwing in the towel on improving the team.

Marrero plays a decent 3B and seems to be able to hit.  I have no idea why the flailing Holt had been up there game after game.

Pedey doesn't need a day off on a Sunday a week or so after the All star Break.  They needed a full lineup to win that series.

Someone needs to take Bogey and several others aside and tell them when they swing the bat, swing it like you mean it.  No more of these half swings resulting in weak infield ground outs.  I'm tired of guys not knowing what they're supposed to be doing in one at bat after another.  Plus, if they guy is landing his 2 seam fastball right over the plate, time after time, why not sit on it and try to square one up?

Pitching keeps them in the games, the team needs to score more than 2 runs to win games.

I don't know if a mentioned it or not but a full time Red Sox scout just bought a house near me.  When I was out on my morning walk we chatted a bit about how these guys are all rolling over on the ball hence the weak ground outs.  So I surmise from that conversation that coaches are aware of the issue and what is wrong but whatever they are doing to fix it isn't working.

I have a better idea for Bogaerts.  Trade him or send him down.  I really mean that.  This guy is fading faster than a pair of worn out jeans and he will only get worse.  This guy has become a total minus to us.  He does nothing now that is positive for the team, doesn't hit, doesn't field, doesn't run the base well (when he does get on) and has as much spirit and spunk as doo on the grass.
