Pomeranz seeks continued success against Royals

Evan Chronis

Red Sox left-hander Drew Pomeranz will look to put the finishing touches on an impressive July when he takes the mound against Royals right-hander Jason Hammel in the rubber game on Sunday at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox snapped the Royals' nine-game win streak with a 9-8 walk-off win in 10 innings on Saturday night. Boston sits a half-game behind the Yankees atop the American League East, while Kansas City is three behind the first-place Indians in the AL Central.

Pomeranz is riding a career-high four straight wins, including three in July. Pomeranz has a 2.60 ERA in six starts during the streak. He will be making his second start of the season against the Royals, allowing six hits and two runs over 6 1/3 innings in a no-decision against Kansas City on June 21.

The former All-Star is tied for fourth place in the American League in wins (10) and 11th in ERA (3.59).

Hammel (4-8, 4.81 ERA) won his last start against the Red Sox on June 19 at Kauffman Stadium, allowing two runs over seven innings, but he has not won since that outing. In his last start, Hammel took a no-decision against the Tigers after giving up three runs in 5 2/3 innings.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• Hammel is 2-3 with a 4.31 ERA in 14 career appearances against the Red Sox.

• Hanley Ramirez is 7-for-16 with one double and one home run in his career against Hammel.

• Pomeranz has 115 strikeouts, which ranks 13th in the American League. His 9.61 SO/9.0 IP ratio is 8th in the AL.

Then we better win today because tomorrow is a lost cause.  And it begs the question as to why Fister is still with the team and now in the starting rotation?  The guy sucks; we all know that save for Farrell and Dombrowski, both of who should now be on the unemployment line.

::) :P I guess they can't use Johnson who has a shoulder issue.  Is there no one else?

That magnifies today as a must win.  Hammer stinks but he hasn't had a W since - you guessed it! - he faced the Sox a month and a half ago!  So,  this is a pitchers' duel because of our inept offense.

Listening to Gomes and O'Brien and Gomes makes you really appreciate what we lost when NESN fired Don Orsillo.
