RAYS V RED SOX

MONDAY, APRIL 17, 2017, 11:05 A.M. AT FENWAY PARK

TV:  NESN, MLBN, FOX SPORTS SUN

TAMPA BAY, 6-7........................................................................BOSTON, 7-5

TAMPA:

BLAKE SNELL, LHP, 0-1, 3.18 ERA, 6K

Snell's familiar pattern of not pitching deep into the game continued
Wednesday against the Yankees.  He receieved a no-decision, but he walked
three and lasted just 4 2/3 innings.  He is 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA in two
career starts against the Red Sox.

BOSTON:

STEVEN WRIGHT, RHP, 0-1, 13.50 ERA, 5K

The knuckballer will try to recover from perhaps the worst start of his
career, when he  was pounded for eight hits, eight runs and four homers in
1 1/3 innings of a loss to the Orioles.  Wright is 1-2 with a 6.06 ERA
in three starts vs the Rays.

Red Sox, Rays prepped for Patriots' Day tilt

Quinn Roberts

One of the most important games of the Red Sox season is always the third Monday in April. It's better known throughout Massachusetts as Patriots' Day.

After the Boston Marathon bombings on Patriots' Day in 2013, the game holds even more significance throughout New England.

The Rays and Red Sox square off at 11:05 a.m. ET in what marks the 50th consecutive season the Red Sox have hosted the Patriots' Day game.

Red Sox knuckleballer Steven Wright is coming off perhaps the worst start of his career, allowing eight runs on eight hits, including four homers, in just 1 1/3 innings vs. Orioles on Wednesday.

While Wright said he's ready to get back on the mound after an eventful week, especially for such a meaningful game.

"I think it is an honor. It is such a big deal for the Red Sox in more ways than one," Wright said. "It is a great holiday for the city of Boston. I want to have a great showing."

Rays left-hander Blake Snell couldn't go deep in Wednesday's game against the Yankees, allowing two runs on two hits in 4 2/3 innings for the no-decision.

Snell, who's never pitched at Fenway Park, is excited for his first time to be in town and on the hill for Marathon Monday.

"I feel like I've seen so much activity going on in the city, and so much happening. It's been kind of cool to be a part of," Snell said. "Being able to pitch tomorrow, knowing that it's going on, is also going to be something that I'm excited for as well."

THREE THINGS TO WATCH IN THIS GAME

• In his only career start vs. Rays, Wright allowed four runs on seven hits over four innings.

• Snell is 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA in two career starts vs. the Red Sox.

• Rays pitchers have compiled a 1.53 ERA and held Boston to a .161 average over the four times the clubs have faced off on Patriots' Day.

Notes: The Red Sox are 69-52 in Patriots Day games, including 11 wins in the last 16 ... Steven Wright didn’t have his knuckleball working well and was shelled in his last outing, allowing eight hits and eight runs in 1 1/3 innings to the Orioles. Four of the hits were home runs ... Xander Bogaerts hit his 100th double Sunday, joining Bobby Doerr, Ted Williams, Carl Yastrzemski, and Tony Conigliaro as the only Red Sox to reach that milestone before age 25 ... The Red Sox lead MLB in team batting average at .287 ... The Red Sox begin a three-game set in Toronto on Tuesday, then play three in Baltimore next weekend.

Real deal the next Mariano!!! I`ll wait awhile before getting high strung on a guy with a couple innings in the majors and a career 3.08 era in the minors.

Hanley was limping like he pulled a hammy yesterday and today he's back out there.  iono

Nice to see the bats alive in the early innings. Let's hope Wright has settled down after a BAD 1st with 30 pitches.

Rob from Mass

Wright gets out of a 2 on 1 out jam with a pop up and a big K.

markj

Moreland continues to show he was a great acquisition.

longgame

Sale has to be saying "where are these guys when I pitch?"  Then again, he doesn't spot the other team a lead like the rest of our staff.  It would be great if Wright can have a good outing the rest of the way.

ipot

At least Wright settled down.  It's become a real trend to spot the other team lots o' runs in the 1st.
Glad to see Hanley back in lineup

Good job by Wright after an awful 1st inning settled down and kept the Sox ahead.
