YANKEES V RED SOX
FRIDAY, AUGUST 27, 2017, 7 PM, FENWAY PARK
TV: NESN, YES, MLBN, (OUT-OF-MARKET ONLY)
NEW YORK, (64-55).........................................................................................BOSTON, (69-51)
NEW YORK:
JORDAN MONTGOMERY, LHP, 7-5, 3.94 ERA, 115K
Montgomery will make his second straight start against the Red Sox after
holding them to a run on two hits in 5 1/2 innings on Wednesday. Montgomery
walked three and struck out four in an 84-pitch effort.
BOSTON:
DREW POMERANZ, LHP, 12-4, 3.39 ERA, 132K
The left-hander was effective while beating the Yankees on August 12,
giving up seven hits and three runs over 6 2/3 innings. Pomeranz has given
up three runs or fewer in 10 of his last 11 starts.
Yanks-Sox rivalry, battle for 1st shift to Fenway
Ian Browne
For the second consecutive weekend, baseball's most storied rivalry will be on display. This time, the venue is Fenway Park, where the second-place Yankees will try to chip into the Red Sox's lead in the American League East.
Boston took back sole possession of first from New York on Aug. 1, and will try to stave off its rivals for the rest of the stretch run.
"Let's win," said Red Sox infielder Eduardo Nunez. "They have a really good team and they have good hitting and good pitching, but we do, too. We'll see how it goes."
Fenway fans will be in for a treat if this weekend's series matches the excitement level of the showdown in the Bronx last weekend.
The Yankees rallied back from a 3-0 deficit in the eighth inning to win the Friday night opener. The Red Sox were down against Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning of the Sunday finale when Rafael Devers stunned everyone by belting a 102.8-mph heater over the wall in left-center to tie the game. Boston won the game in 10 innings, and took two out of three in the series.
Nunez, who started his career with the Yankees and is now sparking the Red Sox, is happy to be back in the rivalry.
"That was fun last weekend," said Nunez. "It's great baseball. I was in San Francisco on the other side of the country earlier this year, and now I'm here and just trying to enjoy this."
Drew Pomeranz, one of the most underrated players on this year's Red Sox squad, gets the ball for Friday night's opener.
"It's always a huge rivalry," said Pomeranz. "It gives you a little more adrenaline. I think I was throwing a little harder last [Saturday]. Just pure adrenaline that first inning. It's fun for us. The crowds come out for the games and they're wild and we want to beat those guys, especially being in a tight race."
The Yankees counter with lefty Jordan Montgomery, who held his own in the matchup with Red Sox ace Chris Sale in last weekend's series finale, giving up one run in 5 1/3 innings.
"I felt good," said Montgomery. "My fastball command has been getting better and better. My curveball was a little iffy at times, but I threw it well enough to keep them off balance. Slider back door was good. I'm still trying to find my changeup, but it will be there eventually."
The Yankees are 7-5 against the Red Sox this season. After this weekend's three-game series, the clubs have one more series this season, a four-game set at Yankee Stadium from Aug. 31-Sept. 3.
THREE THINGS TO WATCH IN THIS GAME
• When batters have put Pomeranz's curveball in play this season, they have put it on the ground 63.8 percent of the time. That's the fourth-highest rate out of more than 40 pitchers who have generated at least 50 batted balls on curves in 2017.
• While Chapman has struggled against Boston this season (two blown saves, 8.44 ERA), Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel has a 1.80 ERA and a .105 opponents' batting average in four appearances against New York.
• By and large, the Red Sox have done a nice job against Aaron Judge this season, holding him to a .174 average and one home run in 12 games. However, Gary Sanchez has four homers and a 1.007 OPS in his 43 plate appearances against Boston.

Red Sox vs. NYY:
Núñez 2B,
Betts RF,
Benintendi LF,
Ramirez 1B,
Young DH,
Bogaerts SS,
Devers 3B,
Vázquez C,
Bradley Jr. CF,
Pomeranz LHP.
OK boys, lets rumble !!! thumb_u rofl
Hoping Montgomery doesn't hypnotize the bats like last time....
Weather could be iffy tonight .Breezy T storms ......
Saturday DH .......
Ok start for Pomeranz aside from the nearly 20 pitches. It'll be another 5+ inning start for him if he keeps that up.
Raffy goes deep for 2. Love this kid.
Pom Pom gets out of another one. Phew. Doing his best Dice-K impersonation tonight....
Pomerantz out hurt. Looks like a back problem. On to the pen we go.
Workman better get out of his mess.
We're gonna need more runs. Workman, Reed, Kelly worry me...
Atta boy Vaz, 3-0.
Meatball! ::) 3-2.
Kardiac Kelly?
Seems it's always one or two players carrying the offensive load.
No question about that one.
Kelly chokes the game AGAIN. NYY win 3-3 and 3 GB.
Is Boyer out again?
edit: Ayuh! I totally spaced that
Kelly came back out for another inning? I would have thought one was as much as you're going to get out of him. Now fully into bullpen meltdown and the bats are mostly asleep.

Yeah, I was smoldering over the same thing. No breaking ball tonight. Personally, I think he didn't give him enough time to warm up again. He was short tossing before Barnes faced one batter more and all of a sudden he's ready. Strange stuff.
This game is about to head south in a big way.
When their Bullpen meltdown there is no doubt about it.
How pathetic is this? We're giving runs to the Yankees.
Reed finally stops the bleeding.
Bases loaded, one out. Prime GIDP opportunity.
Mookie at least gets a sac fly to drive in a run.
AB drives in another run.
Moreland drives in 2 runs to take the lead. Amazing.
Xander ends the rally. Not a surprise.
Haha!! JBJ drives in 2 more off Chapman. Sox up 9-6.
So much for that 3 game lead.A lot of clutch hits tonight and we saw the real Reed tonight.5 games up.
Kimbrel was stellar. K'd the side. Impressive comeback win after blowing the lead.
They got Reed to build a bridge to Kimbrel. There was a huge accident just before the bridge but they got it cleared up just in time. Reed pitched 1.2 innings and got 2 big out's to stop the bleeding in the 7th and pitched a good 8th. He gets the win. Kimbrel the save. On to Saturday.

Well Schloik, fpr my money Addison Reed made amends for last Friday night's meltdown that cost us a game. Tonight he saved our hides and the guys hit in the clutch when it counted in the seventh and eighth inning----Betts, Benintendi, Moreland...........Bogaerts? NO WAY!!!!! Not a surprise; he is as bad a hitter in the clutch as there is. A choker all the way. But we won and we all feel good tonight. I hope Drew isn't badly hurt because we need him and I have little confidence in Fister. To me that means we need to win tomorrow to take the series and be at least six up on the Yanks when the series is over, though a sweep would be even better. Still, let's concentrate on one game at a time.

He looked pretty good the other day hitting that hr in the 9th in our comeback win against the Cards. He made an out in the inning tonight. So did 2 other people.

Well you have a point there George. I just wish he would start to show he can hit with men on base. He has been very deficient in that area for most of his time in Boston. But I must stop complaining........WE WON tonight and that to me is all that counts. With you too, I would guess.

Winning is the important thing. It was a rocky game but they pulled it out and that's all you can ask. Not all wins are pretty. Some are damn ugly. Was a big win since if all else fails the Yanks can only pick up 1 game on the Sox this series. Puts the Yanks in a tough spot.
The fact that the Sox seem to be able to get to Chapman is a big plus in my eyes. He's hardly lights out against the Sox.

I think the way he was used last year in the playoffs may have had a negative effect on him. I know he wasn't happy about it.
The antidote to Barnes/Kelly/Hembree is Green/Kahnle/Chapman. Worked out OK. thumb_u
I had to watch the comeback through a window of a restaurant on the Santa Monica Pier; i sent my guests to the amusements.
Early word out is Pomeranz feeling better after the game .
Seems like Farrell knew what he was getting with Vazquez as he looks better each game with the bat .With Leon as back up the C posisition looks set for a while. If and when the off injured Swihart ever gets healthy I see him as trade bait.
As DAD would say, "SON, all's well that ends well" !!! What a game, that DEVERS is something !! We tried to give it away/back but the boys came through ..... Chris Sale tonight, "coming to carry us home" !! thumb_u rofl
Our bullpen sucked, but theirs sucked more. Giaridi continues to get hammered on posting boards for his continued use of Chapman in key situations.
I wonder what Giardi said to Chapman when he came to the mound with the interpreter. It is clear that the Red Sox in general and Devers in particular are living in his head.
Happy we won Friday night; hoping for another "W" on Saturday.
Sunday, goodness we have not decided who is going to pitch; between
Porcello/Fister.
I wonder how Johnson is doing in the minors.... iono

Hearing that it will be Porcello.
My Daughter called me last night and mentioned that the HR off Barnes was his 1st since May 7 a span of 43 games. His 4th of the season.
The good news here is they did have a breakdown in pitching yet still won the game. Once Pomeranz came out you sort of knew it would be an adventure stringing together that much of the bullpen.
Two absolutely great things last night - giving up a four run inning but coming right back and putting up four more and the performance by Reed and Kimbrel to finish them off.
Chapman looks terrible. This is a great chance to really stick it to the Yankees over the next two games.

Chapman is totally burnt out. They have a problem there. A good thing for us, but I got a feeling we won't see him in any game situations unless they have 0 choice.
We need to get Joe Kelly fixed. He's looked outmatched against the NYY. Happy that Reed figured it out just in time...

Man, how long have you been in California IPOT? I thought you were to get in touch with me if you came West. Let me know where you're hanging your hat. We can touch base and maybe show you my beloved Red Sox room. 17 years ago today I became a Red Sox fan. I would like to commemorate that with a nice win for our team tonight.
