Title: GAME #54, BOSTON RED SOX AT BALTIMORE ORIOLES
Post by: Bear on June 02, 2017, 01:16:46 AM
RED SOX V ORIOLES

FRIDAY, JUNE 2, 2017, 7PM AT ORIOLE PARK AT CAMDEN YARDS

TV:  NESN, MASN, MLBN, (OUT-OF-MARKET ONL)

BOSTON, ( 27-24)...........................................................................BALTIMORE, (28-24)

BOSTON:

RICK PORCELLO, RHP, 3-6, 4.21 ERA, 68K

The sinkerballer gave up eleven hits but just two runs in his last start.
Opponents are hitting .306 against the right-hander, who hasn't come close
to matching last year's breakthough season.  Porcello is 2-4 with a 4.89 ERA
lifetime at Camden Yards.

BALTIMORE:

ALEC ASHER, RHP, 1-3, 2.77 ERA, 23K

Asher will get his fourth start of the season on Friday after taking the place
of Ubaldo Jimenez in the starting rotation on Sunday.  In his first start since May 2,
the righty only made it though two innings after giving up six runs on six hits.

Porcello eyes return to Cy form vs. Asher, O's

Mandy Bell

Despite what has happened between the Orioles and Red Sox this season, the teams say they are only focused on winning games in a competitive American League East.

"Look at the standings, it's bunched up," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "So we're right in the heat of it. We're right in the throes of maybe the second-third of the season where you get teams kind of hitting their stride. Everybody's dealt with oddities, whether it's injuries, performance, what have you. But every game is important."

Right-hander Rick Porcello (3-6, 4.21 ERA) will take the mound for the Red Sox. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner has excelled recently at attacking hitters, having thrown the highest rate of pitches while ahead in the count (34.9 percent) of any qualified starter. The righty has a 4.89 lifetime ERA at Camden Yards.

For the Orioles, Alec Asher (1-3, 3.77) is looking to get ahead in the count more often in his fourth start. Asher took the place of Ubaldo Jimenez in the rotation Sunday, but lasted just two innings against Houston after allowing six runs on six hits.

"You try to take what you can from it," Asher said. "I fell behind a lot of hitters and I just had to give in. And it happens. You try not to take your bad outings too serious and go from there."

Asher started against Boston on May 2, throwing six innings and giving up three runs, including two home runs to Hanley Ramirez.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• Porcello finished April tied for the most barrels allowed in the Majors. But Porcello turned his contact around in May, reducing both his barrel rate (from 13.2 to 5.7 percent) and average exit velocity against (from 90.2 to 87.7 mph) by significant margins.

• Chris Davis (8-for-39), Adam Jones (11-for-48) and Mark Trumbo (9-for-29) have a combined .241 career average against Porcello with nine home runs and 23 RBIs.

• Boston's Pablo Sandoval got three hits as the DH in his first game back from the disabled list Wednesday.

On another board we had an annual argument over whether games at the end of the season counted more.  My point was that they did only if you didn't win enough earlier.

They all count the same no matter when you play them.

Porcello will go 6.2 inns with 12 hits, 6 Ks, 1 BB.  How many ERs he gives up is the only thing that counts.

If anyone can allow 1 ER on 12 hits, it's him :o

Rick had his 1 great season and now the hope is he can stay around the 3.7- 4 ERA mark and not much higher.

This team only seems to be able to disappoint, disappoint and disappoint some more.  I've taken to just revelingwhen they win a game or two in a row and just allow myself to expect that they will once again fall on their collective asses and windup between third and fourth place this season.  Such a finish might allow DD to finally cashier the worst manager in the league and hire someone with a li ttle fire who knows how to handle the ups and downs of this still pretty young team.  Truth be told, I don't think we're going anywhere this season except an early off season.  No leadership, no sense of urgency, poorly coached, poor on fundamentals,  unable to rise to the occasion more than a few games at a time, dependent on other teams giving them the game with mistakes, and players on this team that are not winners in any sense of the word.  Just one disappointment after another and to be honest, I expect more of the same tonight and that both saddens and pisses me off.

Porcello's sinker isn't sinking.  He was throwing meatballs.  He was lucky to have only given up homeruns.  There could have easily been two more.

The Red Sox have only one hit against Asher after 5 who has a 3-10 career record in 3 years.  They look awful at the plate.  No one looks worse than Ramirez.  I wonder just how hurt he is?  I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't the next guy on the DL.

The Sox look so tentative at the plate.  Benintendi is "in between".  I hope he gets his mojo back and soon.

Back to 3rd place.

My friends, I love you guys and gals on this board and we've got a nice group of good baseball people here who know the game and love their team.  However, if you read my earlier post you can see that what I said pretty much summed up the game they played tonight with all the warts I described earlier.  Most likely we'll get swept in Baltimore and most likely in New York, and so here's my deal.  I'm gone from this point on UNLESS Farrell is fired after this road trip.  If he is still on board I'm leaving for the rest of the summer and won't come back until the last couple of weeks.  I will expect all of you to join me in screaming for Farrell to be canned before the team is totally destroyed by this useless and worthless excuse for a manager.  Perhaps it will take a concerted effort of posters on all the boards and the press in Boston and people on TV and radio to scream for this guy's dismissal.  It all starts at the top and I would argue with anyone and everyone but GOD that Farrell is the main reason this team looks, acts, and plays like shit.  I'll miss you guys but rather than make myself miserable and make you all miserable with my constant diatribes it's better for me to take off for awhile

I want to have confidence in Dombrowski and believe that he is being held back from firing Farrell because of orders from that miserable bastard owner of ours, but if he is not, then he is as culpable as anyone for this miserable turn of events.  Have a nice summer guys and maybe our prayers will be answered.

Fred, old friend, please stick it out with us. We need you here to keep us straight.
I realize how difficult it is at time, (most of the time) but surely you realize as a
Sox fan, Les Miserables of Boston.  We have survived many years and will continue
to do so, just stick it out Fred.  Things will change.  Isn't that what we all say,
things will turn around.  You don't want to miss that Fred.
It's been difficult posting the pregrames as I read who's pitching and I say to myself,
"oh no, not him; we're gonna lose this one."  More often than not, we do end us
losing that game.  Ughhhhhhhhhhhh.

ONCE A RED SOX FAN, ALWAYS A RED SOX FAN.  thumb_u

I second that, Fred! We need to share our communal gripes about this team.  Reading each other's posts helps us get through the ups and downs.  While I agree Farrell is doing the team no favors, he can only do so much about a punchless offense.  There is no "feared hitter" in the middle of the order (Hanley? Moreland? Benintendi? Fatso?).  Betts and Bogaerts are the only guys doing anything consistent.  The rest are just MIA.

What a way to loose another game...  After the 1st inning, the Sox were still in it but they could not figure a way to use the entire field and keep the defense & pitcher off balance.  SHAME on  J F .....  Lets see what comes out of this today ??     CHANGE is coming....  B T W ,  Hanley, what is his problem ?  Barnes, something going on, on the home front ???    &   J F,  please humor me, IE:  Bunt, run, steel, hit & run , go with the pitch....  Heck, all that has to be worth  3+ runs per game ???

Farrell isn't going anywhere Fred, as much as many of us would like that to happen.  I don't know what it is, but he just can't get the best out of this team.  Sandoval came back and actually hits, but everyone else goes quiet.  JBJ starts to turn it around and Benitendi finds a black hole.  Pedey is out and we know that these short stints for him always seem to end up with a end of year story about how he played hurt that year and that's why he only hit .275 with no pop all year.

Have to give Porcello credit for hanging around and making a game of it.  He gives up solo HRs but was able to limit the damage.  Too bad the Sox looked way overmatched by a mediocre pitcher.
