Title: GAME #18 BOSTON RED SOX AT BALTIMORE ORIOLES
Post by: Bear on April 22, 2017, 03:30:05 AM
RED SOX V ORIOLES

SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 2017, 7:05 PM AT CAMDEN YARDS

TV:  NESN, MASN 2

BOSTON, 10-7..............................................................................BALTIMORE 11-4

BOSTON:

STEVEN WRIGHT, RHP, 1-1, 8.36 ERA, 9K

The knuckleballer earned his first win of the season in his start, bouncing back after
allowing two runs in the first inning and holding the Rays to one earned run
over six-plus frames.

BALTIMORE:

JAYSON AQUISNO, LHP, 0-0, -.-, 0 K

The lefty got the nod because he prospects better against the Red Sox
lineup and Aquisno had an impressive spring.  Recalled on Wednesday,
he will be making his first MLB start in Saturday's match.

Wright seeking redemption vs. O's, Aquino

Jeff Seidel

When the Red Sox and Orioles meet in the second game of a three-game series at Camden Yards on Saturday night, one team will face a pitcher it knows a bit -- while the other gets someone it has barely seen.

Steven Wright (1-1, 8.36 ERA) got the win Monday for the Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay one start after the Orioles touched him up for eight runs on eight hits in 1 1/3 innings. He threw a complete game the last time he pitched in Baltimore, on May 30, 2016, giving up two runs on four hits in the win.

But the Red Sox do not know as much about Jayson Aquino of the Orioles, who will be making his first Major League start. The 24-year-old left-hander has pitched in just three Major League games, all in relief in 2016.

The Red Sox did see him twice: Aquino gave up no runs on one hit in 1 2/3 innings overall in two relief appearances against the Red Sox, so they will be scratching for details on the pitcher.

"You take whatever information is available, including those who may have seen him in person in years past," Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "You're able to formulate at least a starting point."

The Red Sox also are hoping shortstop Xander Bogaerts, who did not start Friday due to a sore left thumb but came in as a defensive replacement in the eighth, returns to the starting lineup Saturday. Jackie Bradley Jr. came back from the disabled list (sprained knee) and did start Friday. The Orioles decided not to put outfielder Seth Smith (hamstring) on the disabled list.

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• The Red Sox entered the series ranked last in the Major Leagues with just seven homers. But they had a similar start last year, hitting only 11 through April 20, 2016, before banging out 189 homers after May 1 -- and Farrell said he is not worried.

• Aquino is filling in as the No. 5 starter for the Orioles as right-hander Chris Tillman (shoulder bursitis) remains on the disabled list. The team hopes for an early May return for him, and he'll throw in a rehab assignment at Class A Advanced Frederick Saturday.

RED SOX LINEUP: NO DUSTIN PEDROIA DAY AFTER SPIKING INCIDENT

Rob Bradford

It isn’t a surprise, but it is noteworthy.
A day after leaving the game in the eighth inning after injuring his knee on a slide by Baltimore’s Manny Machado, Dustin Pedroia is out of the Red Sox’ starting lineup Saturday.

Pedroia, who was getting treatment on his surgically-repaired knee after the Red Sox’ 2-0 loss to the Orioles, is replaced in the batting order by Marco Hernandez. Xander Bogaerts replaces the second baseman in the leadoff spot against Baltimore lefty Jason Aquino.

Here is the Red Sox lineup with Steven Wright on the mound for the visitors:

Xander Bogaerts SS,
Jackie Bradley Jr. CF,
Mookie Betts RF,
Hanley Ramirez DH,
Mitch Moreland 1B,
Chris Young LF,
Sandy Leon C,
Pablo Sandoval 3B,
Marco Hernandez, 2B

JBJ goes way deep and puts the Sox up 2-0.

Oh for Pete's Sake. Another meatball, another dinger. Wright is throwing batting practice.

Every batter this inning so far has hit the ball hard. Luckily two of them were catchable.

Wright has given up 7 hr's already this year. Only 12 given up last season. He's not fooling many hitters so far.

Another double. This could be a very ugly inning.

Now a single. This inning has definitely become ugly. Sox down 4-2 now. Wright is gone.

And now an infield single and a single to right field. Hit the showers Steve.

O's pitching is embarrassing Sox hitters. Hanley looked pathetic on that strike out.

Have Sox batters forgotten how to hit with men on base?

Nobody told JBJ this team doesn't hit home runs.  I'm sure Farrell straightened him out after.

I think what you mean is their minor league pitching is embarrassing them.

Amazingly they get a hit with RISP, but it's an infield single and the runner doesn't advance.

Another pathetic display of offense (or lack thereof). And one nuclear inning. Wright needs to get his ducks in a row.

Another double. This could be a very ugly inning.

When Turdball John Farrell put Stephen Wright to pinch run last summer he should have been fired on the spot.  Instead we have that bum still managing this team and running it in the ground while he provides no leadership and is creating a pack of candy asses who lack drive, desire and commitment.  We should have fired Farrell, hired Lovullo and brought some fire to this team.  Instead we have a rudderless team that no leadership in the dugout but rather total ineptitude but the worst part is that we have no leadership on the field. Everyone is looking for the other guy to take charge.  We could be heading for a totally crappy season.  2014 anyone?

And one more thing.  Wright hasn't been the same since he hurt his shoulder in his ill fated pinch running escapade last August.  I mean we had Clay Worthless Buchholz who we could have used in that capacity and if he had gotten hurt it would simply been par for the course.  I really despise John Farrell.  He is a totally pathetic and worthless manager.

This team is starting to get downright boring.  Just uninspired, listless stuff 2 nights in a row.  The O's own them.

Wright is a knuckleballer and he's doing his best Wakefield impression = implosion w/o notice.

The lack of leadership is glaring at this point. And Dombrowski's lying if he says he doesn't see it or worse it isn't there. We're going to find out soon whether or not he's even got enough juice to fix it. I'm not convinced he does.

Muggah--I still believe Farrell is being protected by Prune Face and DD has been told that our worthless manager is off limits to him.  And we could have hired Lovullo who is doing well so far at Arizona while we scuffle with no leadership either in the dugout or out on the field..  Just to be clear, Mookie is no leader, doesn't want to be and if he is forced to take that mantle on he will go into the tank.  Leave him alone.  Find someone closer to the action-----and bench Leon once and for all and call up Blake Swihart.
