ORIOLES V RED SOX

MONDAY, MAY 1, 2017, 7:10 PM AT FENWAY PARK

TV:  NESN, MASN, ESPN

BALTIMORE, (15-8)........................................................................BOSTON, (13-11)

BALTIMORE:

DYLAN BUNDY, RHP, 3-1, 1.65ERA, 23K

Bundy was the Orioles best starter the first month of the season, pitching
to a 1.15ERA over 32 2/3 innings pitched.  The righty is in just his first full
season as a starter.

BOSTON:

RICK PORCELLO, RHP, 1-3, 4.75ERA, 32K

The sinkerballer is starting to round back into form after a slow start.  Though
Porcello has lost his last two outings, the righty has given up just two earned runs
over 13 2/3 innings.  This is his fourth straight start vs an AL East opponent.

Porcello, Bundy set to renew O's-Sox rivalry

The Red Sox and Orioles aren't expecting any carryover from the heated series that took place last weekend at Camden Yards. But the drama is lurking beneath the surface, and Monday's opener of a four-game series in Boston is intriguing, nonetheless.

Baltimore righty Dylan Bundy will square off against Boston's Rick Porcello, but as always, there could be much more to take in.

The O's and the Sox have had plenty of headline-worthy moments already this season. The last time the Orioles went to Fenway Park, manager Buck Showalter made headlines for saying that his club -- like the Red Sox -- was also dealing with illness but not being so public about it.

"Nobody really wants to hear somebody else complain about it," Showalter said in the early-April matchup. "Our guys have done a good job not broadcasting it to the world."

That angered Boston manager John Farrell, and the two teams saw more drama at Camden Yards, when Dustin Pedroia was injured on a hard slide from Manny Machado on April 21.

Two games later, Machado saw a pitch up near his head from Sox reliever Matt Barnes, leading to a four-game suspension which Barnes returned from on Sunday night against the Cubs.

"I know, from our side, we're going to play baseball, get back to doing what we do -- competing, and that's it," said Pedroia. "I think everybody doesn't want anybody to get hurt or anything like that. That's the end of the story. We're trying to play baseball and win games. That's all we're concentrating on."

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• Bundy has been the Orioles' best starter this season, pitching to a 1.65 ERA in 32 2/3 innings. One of the keys to his success? Re-introducing his cutter.

• Though Porcello has lost his last two outings, the righty has given up just two earned runs over 13 2/3 innings. This is his fourth straight start vs. an AL East opponent.

• Orioles closer Zach Britton will be rejoining the team in Boston. Britton, who has been sidelined with a left forearm injury, could be activated as early as Monday.

Stat of the Day: After being outscored, 17-3, in the first inning through their first 18 games, the Sox are beating teams, 11-1, in the first inning of their last six.

High praise:
Cubs manager Joe Maddon made a lofty comparison regarding Red Sox rookie Andrew Benintendi Sunday, calling him “Freddy Lynn reincarnated.” Benintendi went 2 for 4 in Sunday night’s win, giving him a team-high 30 hits and 14 RBIs. He is the first Sox rookie to lead the team in hits and RBIs through the month of April since Lynn in 1975.

Tracking Bundy:

Bundy has been impressive through his first five starts, going 3-1 with a 1.65 ERA, but the Orioles are keeping an eye on the 24-year old, who went through Tommy John surgery in 2013 and shoulder issues in 2014. Manager Buck Showalter flirted with the idea of pushing Bundy back to Tuesday to give him an extra day’s rest but decided against it. Bundy has faced the Sox twice already this season, going 1-1 and allowing three earned runs on 13 hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 13 innings. He threw 106 pitches the first time he faced the Sox and 108 the second.

Notes:

The Sox are still sitting in third place after taking two of three from the Cubs over the weekend. They’re 2½ games behind the Yankees and Orioles . . .
The Orioles have a 3-2 edge on the Sox in the season series . . .
Porcello is still looking for his first win since the season opener. He has taken the loss in each of his past three starts, giving up 14 runs (10 earned) on 19 hits in 18 innings with 19 strikeouts and 7 walks . . .
Hanley Ramirez is riding a six-game hitting streak, homering in back-to-back games . . .
Jackie Bradley Jr. is 2 for his last 22 with eight strikeouts. He hasn’t had an extra-base hit since he homered against the Orioles April 22 . . .
Mitch Moreland has cooled off since hitting 11 doubles in his first 16 games. Over his last eight games, he is 3 for 27 with a double, a homer, and three RBIs . . .
Baltimore’s Chris Davis was scratched from Sunday’s game with right elbow soreness. He was hit on the elbow Friday by a pitch from CC Sabathia.

Make no mistake about it,  this is a big game/must win to set the pace for this series !! thumb_u

The O's and Sox have become a real rivalry.  That's a good thing.  Not just NYY any more.

It appears that he always catches Sale and Poecello.

ojdidit

Once again a s!!t hitter hurts the Red Sox.

markj

Game over. Noffense is back. Unless the O's start making lots of mistakes, this one is heading into the L column.

They could show this same game every night and I wouldn't know the difference.  Maybe we'll make some pathetic attempt and score a run before it's over, after giving up a couple more here in the 8th as it's looking.  In the words of the President, "Sad".  sigh

Ah, not just runs, but errors to bring in those runs.  Like I said, same game, different day.

The conversation now is JBJ, E-Rod and who else is going away for a slugger.

SeaBeachFred

Is this team pathetic or is this team pathetic?????  They can't get their signals straight as to who covers second on a possible double play grounder and the ball winds up in center field.  Then another possible dp grounder to iron glove and shitty defensive infielder Marco Barfo, who also can't hit in the clutch either, and he boots the ball.  This team is not only shitty, is has no life, no focus, nothing.  Today on MLB  they were talking about the Arizona D'Backs where there is enthusiasm, new life and a real commitment to right their ship.  Could it be that Torey Lovullo might have something to do with it?  We could have had him managing our team but we let him leave so shitface Farrell could run the team into the ground.  I mean, what the hell has happened to this team?  We have imploded. Wake the **** up Prune Face and try and save this season.  Get Farrell out of Boston and get someone with a little pulse and enthusiasm into that dugout.  Fundamentally and spiritually and competitively we totally suck.

markj

I guess it won't be the O's making lots of mistakes. Nice implosion by Hembree.

markj

So a screw up by the O's gives the Sox a chance to avoid yet another shutout. Let's see if they can get at least one run here.

Well, well, well, they did it. No shutout.

markj

More stupidity. This team continues to find new ways to screw up.

SeaBeachFred

I can't speak for any other team but there can't be many if any that are as weak in fundamentals as we are.  Between our physical errors and our mental ones we have become a clown outfit, and did you look in the Red Sox dugout?  They looked down and beaten.  This is a team on the road to a complete collapse unless something is done.
