YANKEES V RED SOX

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 26, 2017, 7:10 PM AT FENWAY PARK

TV:  NESN, YES, MLBN

NEW YORK, 11-7.................................................................................BOSTON, 11-88

NEW YORK:

LUIS SEVERINO, RHP, 1-1, 4.05ERA, 27K

Severino had an encouraging outing on Tuesday against the White Sox, even
if he didn't get the win.  The right-hander racked up 10 strikeouts over a career-
best 8 innings.  He also struck out 11 batters in his previous outing.

BOSTON:

RICK PORCELLO, RHP, 1-2, 5.32ERA, 23K

Porcello had and up-and-down start to the season.  After getting a win
in his first start, he's lost two straight games.  He pitched well enough on
Wednesday vs the Blue Jays, allowing three unearned on six hits over
seven innings.

After delay, Sox host Yanks for first meeting of '17

A day later than anticipated, the Red Sox and Yankees at last renew acquaintances on Wednesday night at Fenway Park for the start of what will now be a two-game series.

It will be the first of 19 meetings between the rivals this season.

Rain washed away Tuesday's opener, which will now be played as part of a day-night doubleheader on July 16.
For Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia, the rainout bought him an extra day of recovery after injuring his left knee and ankle over the weekend in Baltimore. Pedroia is expected in Wednesday's lineup.

"Health-wise he's playable," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "Ready to go. I think we all have been around Pedey long enough to know that there's going to be games he doesn't feel physically 100 percent, but he's played a high number of them. A high pain threshold, strong competitor, ready to get back on the field."

Rick Porcello, last season's American League Cy Young Award winner, draws Wednesday's start for the Red Sox. The Yankees counter with righty Luis Severino. Those are the two pitchers who would have gone Tuesday.

"I think we were ready to go following the day off yesterday," said Farrell. "We're not going to control the weather. You don't necessarily like your pitchers in your starting rotation to be backed up in some cases now seven days, but we're looking forward to getting on the field [Wednesday]."

"It's not what you want, but it is what it is and you've got to deal with it," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Sevvy threw some on Sunday and [Masahiro] Tanaka will probably try to throw a little bit today, maybe in the cage. It's not the perfect world, but it's what we're going to do."

The 11-7 Yankees have started off this season better than most expected, while the Red Sox -- predicted by many to win the AL East -- have had to work hard but are still on a 94-win pace. Injuries and the flu have taken a toll on Boston, but that won't affect the intensity of the rivalry when the clubs meet on Wednesday.

"We know they're extremely talented," Girardi said. "They've been through all kinds of things in the first month of the season, whether it's been injuries or the flu bug or whatever. They've been through a lot. Our club went through a cold, a lot of guys had colds, but our guys weren't getting dehydrated. But they're very talented, we understand that."

The Red Sox also maintain a healthy respect for the Yankees.

"They seem to always be able to put together a very competent, strong pitching staff," Farrell said. "Bringing back [Aroldis] Chapman, that's going to be a very good bullpen again. You never want to underestimate a group of young players like they have and what they're capable of."

The Red Sox will be without third baseman Pablo Sandoval, who was placed on the disabled list on Tuesday with a right knee sprain.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• The Yankees are 9-14 against the Red Sox in the past 23 games, but since 2000, they have lost just four of the 17 season series.

• Porcello, who went 22-4 with a 3.15 ERA in his Cy Young season, wasn't exactly lights-out in his first two starts, but his third start, against Tampa Bay on April 14, really skewed his stats. In 4 1/3 innings, Porcello yielded eight earned runs, including four homers.

• The Red Sox were the only Major League team with fewer than 10 home runs on the season before Mookie Betts and Hanley Ramirez hit back-to-back blasts in the first inning Sunday against the Orioles. Mitch Moreland also hit a homer in the fifth inning.

Torreyes 0-2.

Stat of the day: The Red Sox have recorded 10 or more hits nine times this season. They’re 6-3 in those games.

Porcello trying to get back on track: Rick Porcello hasn’t earned a win since the season opener. He’s 0-2 with 15 runs (11 earned) and 25 hits allowed in three starts since. He went seven innings against the Blue Jays in a 3-0 loss last week and threw a season-high 110 pitches. In 14 career starts against the Yankees, he’s 7-5 with a 3.28 ERA. He’s gone at least seven innings against the Yankees in all five of his starts against them as a Red Sox.

Betts in the swing of things: Eight of Mookie Betts’s 11 RBIs this season came on the Sox’s six-game swing through Toronto and Baltimore last week. He went the first six games of the season without an RBI. He’s hitting .412 (7 for 17) with runners in scoring position this season.

Hitsville, USA: Andrew Benintendi is hitting .500 in his past seven games, going 15 for 30. He’s coming off a 5-for-5 game against the Orioles, the first five-hit game in the majors this season. He leads the Sox with 25 hits.

Other notes:

The Sox are sitting in third place in the AL East after going 3-3 on their road trip. They’re a half-game behind the second-place Yankees, who are making their first trip to Fenway this season …

The Yankees have won 10 of 13 after starting the season 1-4 …

Luis Severino has found a groove in his past two starts. He picked up his first win since 2015 when he went seven innings and struck out 11 against the Rays on April 13. He piled up 10 more Ks in eight innings last Tuesday against the White Sox, but took the loss …

Starlin Castro is on a seven game hit streak with a .407 average, seven RBIs, and two homers in that stretch.

Song of the Day: “Let’s Groove,” Earth, Wind and Fire.

Sox may well be without Pedey for the NYY series.Panda also will probably miss the series although that is good news .Hernandez who went 4-9 against the Os and Ruthledge will most likely share 3rd base duties if Panda can`t play.
A side note, Swihart having problems with the bat at AAA hitting .189.

Wrong Bill....it will only be a great week at the Fens if the Red Sox win both series.  Winning is all that counts.  Moral victories, close and almost dramatic comebacks stink like a sewer at high tide. WINNING AND ONLY WINNING COUNTS, and it high time the Red Sox either barf or get away from the sink.  I could have used a different slogan but you get the picture.

If Swihart is hitting shitty because he was sent down and is sulking, well the hell with him.  Someone has to tell him to saddle up and fly right and stop feeling sorry for yourself.  Another prime example of a prospect getting around Farrell and winding becoming a meely mouth candy ass.  Get the hell in there Blake and stop making excuses.  You need to hit and so far you haven't done anything but shit the bed and we've enough Lars Anderson types to last a lifetime in Boston.

And we still haven't been able to put our first string lineup out there yet.  When the hell is everyone going to tape up, gut it up and the hell out there and play.  As Alvin Dark once told one of his players back in the early 60's......YOU CAN PLAY AS LONG AS YOU CAN TOLERATE THE PAIN.

The RAIN man might have something to say about tonight's game.
