ORIOLES V RED SOX

THURSDAY, MAY 4, 2017, 7:10 PM AT FENWAY PARK

TV:  NESN, MASN, MLBN

BALTIMORE, (16-10)................................................................BOSTON, (15-12)

BALTIMORE:

TYLER WILSON, 1-1, 5.40ERA, 4K

Wilson comes from Triple-A to take the place of Ubaldo Jimenez, who hurled
three innings of relief on Wednesday after Kevin Gausman was ejected.
Wilson allowed three runs on six hits in five big league innings this year.

BOSTON:

KYLE KENDRICK, RHP, 0-0, -.-

The sinkerballer comes up from Triple-a-Pawtucket to replace the injured Steve
Wright in the rotation.  This will be the righty's first start in the Major Leagues since
October 2, 2015.  The righty has pitched just once at Fenway in his career.

Red Sox, Orioles finish series at Fenway

Quinn Roberts

The Orioles and Red Sox finish an emotionally charged four-game series at Fenway Park on Thursday with Kyle Kendrick set to make his Boston debut and Baltimore's starter still to be determined.

Ubaldo Jimenez was originally scheduled to start, but after Orioles ace Kevin Gausman hit Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts with a 76 mph curveball in the second inning of Wednesday's game and was ejected, he threw three innings in relief.

After the game, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said the team has a contingency plan, which could possibly include Tyler Wilson or Gabriel Ynoa. He also didn't rule out having Jimenez start after throwing 55 pitches on Wednesday and 68 pitches in his last start.

"It affects a lot of people and things. We just have to make adjustments," Showalter said. "We are probably going to need a reliever tomorrow. We brought someone in. The plan is likely for a long reliever tomorrow. We'll see if we can add someone else."

Meanwhile, Kendrick is making his first career appearance against the Orioles and his first Major League start since Oct. 2, 2015, with the Rockies. He's starting in place of knuckleballer Steven Wright, who was placed on the disabled list with a left knee sprain.

He'll face left fielder Trey Mancini, who in seven games against the Red Sox this season has three home runs and six RBIs. Of his 19 career RBIs, 12 have come against the Red Sox.

"Obviously I wanted to be in the big leagues. The last couple of years I've had have been tough with number-wise and health issues and my shoulder," Kendrick said. "After the spring I had, I knew I still had some left, and just see what happens. Wait it out."

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• Against right-handed pitchers, only the Braves' Freddie Freeman entered Wednesday with more "barrels," than Hanley Ramirez's 12. A barrel is a batted ball whose exit velocity and launch angle gives it at least a .500 expected average and 1.500 expected slugging percentage.

• Dustin Pedroia has not committed an error in his last 60 games. His last came on Aug. 19, 2016.

• Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy is hitting .324 with nine RBIs over his last 11 games at Fenway Park.

Game time: 7:10 p.m.

TV/Radio: NESN / WEEI-FM 93.7., MASON

Red Sox vs. Wilson: Betts 3-10, Bogaerts 4-9, Pedroia 2-10, Bradley 2-8, Leon 1-5, Ramirez 1-5, Hernandez 0-3, Benintendi 0-1, Young 0-1.

Orioles vs. Kendrick: Smith 12-23, Trumbo 3-7, Hardy 2-5, Miley 1-3, Jimenez 0-2.

Orioles call on Wilson: Kevin Gausman’s ejection Wednesday put the Orioles in a bind. Ubaldo Jimenez was originally slated to start Thursday, but he threw three innings in the 4-2 loss. The Orioles had to add Wilson to the roster to start the final game of the series. He was scheduled to start for Triple A Norfolk Thursday. He has made five appearances out of the bullpen for the Orioles this season, but this will be his first start. He has made two starts against the Sox in his career, both last season, going 1-1 with a 2.61 ERA and 14 strikeouts.

Sox tap Kendrick: With Steven Wright out, Kyle Kendrick was tapped to take this turn in the Boston rotation. The 32-year-old righthander, who signed a minor league deal with the Sox before the season, will make his first major league start since 2015. He was sharp in spring training, posting a 2.18 ERA, but struggled out of the gate with Triple A Pawtucket, giving up a combined 10 runs in his first two outings. He bounced back in his last two starts, allowing just three earned runs over 14 innings. Before this year, Kendrick played all nine of his major league seasons in the National League, so this will be his first start against the Orioles.

Notes: Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph probably summed up this drama-filled series best when he said, “We’re so ready for this thing to be over.” . . . The Orioles have dropped to second place in the AL East after losing two of the first three games . . . The Sox are still in third place, 2½ games behind the division-leading Yankees . . . The season series between the teams is now even at 4-4. After Thursday, the Sox and Orioles won’t see each other again until June 1 in Baltimore . . . Sox pitchers have a 2.43 ERA in their last 13 games, the lowest mark in baseball over that stretch . . . Xander Bogaerts is on a seven-game hitting streak, going 9 for his last 23 . . . Trey Mancini is hitting .292 (7 for 24) against the Sox this season. Twelve of his 19 career RBIs have come against the Sox.

STEVEN WRIGHT DONE FOR THE SEASON

Globe Staff

The Red Sox
announced Thursday that pitcher Steven Wright will undergo a cartilage restoration procedure in his left knee Monday and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

The righthander was placed on the disabled list Monday. Righthander Kyle Kendrick was added to the roster and will start Thursday night against Baltimore in Wright’s place.

Wright was 13-5 with a 3.01 earned run average through 22 starts last season. But he injured his right shoulder while pinch running Aug. 7 and is 1-4 with an 8.21 ERA in seven starts since then.

The knee injury occurred in spring training and led to Wright being fitted for a brace. He got through five starts this season before being shut down. He was 1-3 with an 8.25 ERA.

The procedure will be performed by Dr. Riley Williams III at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. Wright is expected to be ready for the 2018 season.

In another roster move, the Red Sox placed infielder Marco Hernandez on the 10-day disabled list with a left shoulder subluxation. Also, pitcher Tyler Thornburg also was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.

Farrell should pay for Wright's treatment and rehab out of pocket.

Red Sox put Hernandez (left shoulder) on DL

Joe Trezza

The Red Sox placed Marco Hernandez on the 10-day disabled list with a left shoulder subluxation Thursday -- one day after the infielder suffered a shoulder strain.

Hernandez, who had been filling in for the injured Pablo Sandoval at third base, hurt himself while making an error in the first inning of Boston's 4-2 win over Baltimore.

Kyle Kendrick, who will start Thursday against the Orioles, was promoted from Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move, and the club transferred reliever Tyler Thornburg to the 60-day DL.

Hernandez, who is typically a reserve utility infielder, had started the past eight games for Boston -- seven of them at third base in place of Sandoval, who is on the DL with a right knee sprain. Boston's super-utility man Brock Holt is also on the disabled list (vertigo).

Hernandez is hitting .276/.300/.328 in 21 games this season after posting a .294/.357/.373 line as a rookie in 2016. He was replaced Wednesday by Josh Rutledge, who is expected to assume third-base duties for at least the short-term.

 Owens has a 3-0 record with a 1.35era in 26.2ip with  32kS and a ridiculous 18 BBs in those 26  2/3innings. What a waste of a AAA roster spot.

Johnson is 1-0  and 2.28era in 23  2/3 innings and 23Ks and 10 BBs so I would think he will get a chance.
He had 1 start in Toronto giving yup 4er and 2 HRs in 5ip with 3bb and 6Ks
Sadly that's what AAA has to offer.

Muggah

Word is Farrell would like to find a way to stretch out Brandon Workman for a possible rotation slot.

What did Farrell have to do with the injury he's had since spring training?

Rob from Mass

Kendrick gives up 2 hits in 1st but no runs.

Can't  see Workman getting stretched out while up with the Sox .
