Title: GAME #138, TORONTO BLUE JAYS AT BOSTON RED SOX
Post by: Bear on September 04, 2017, 02:33:22 AM
BLUE JAYS V RED SOX

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 4, 2017, 7 PM AT FENWAY PARK

TV:  NESN, SNET

TORONTO, (63-74)............................................................................BOSTON, (77-60)

TORONTO:

J.A. HAPP, LHP, 6-10, 3.96 ERA, 110K

J.A. Happ is set to face the Red Sox for the second time in as many
starts.  During his last outing, Happ allowed just one run on four hits and
four walks over six innings.  Prior to that he allowed five earned runs in
back-to-back starts.

BOSTON:

RICK PORCELLO, RHP, 9-15, 4.45 ERA, 160K

The sinkerballer will face the Blue Jays for the second consecutive time.
He turned in a strong outing in Toronto last week, allowing six hits and a run
over 6 1/3 innings while picking up his fifth win in his last six starts.

Porcello, Happ to square off in series opener

Gregor Chisholm

The Red Sox will look to use this three-game series against the last-place Blue Jays at Fenway Park to try to extend their 3 1/2-game lead in the American League East as they head down the stretch.

Boston swept Toronto last week and is 10-3 in the season series.

Right-hander Rick Porcello will try to beat the Blue Jays for the second time in a week when he starts Monday's opener. In the start last week at Rogers Centre, Porcello held the Jays to a run on six hits over 6 2/3 innings while walking two and striking out seven. He also previously faced the Blue Jays on April 19, and was saddled with the loss despite allowing just three unearned runs over seven innings.

The Blue Jays will counter with veteran lefty J.A. Happ, who allowed one run over six innings in a no-decision against Boston last week.

Toronto is 25-36 against the AL East and has lost seven of its last 10 games against the division. That is by far the lowest winning percentage of any team within the AL.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• Red Sox reliever Carson Smith is nearing the end of his very long road to recovery, and it's possible he will be activated prior to this series opener. Smith appeared in just three games for Boston last season prior to undergoing Tommy John surgery.

• Toronto third baseman Josh Donaldson enters this game on a tear. He has 16 home runs over his last 34 games, a stretch that dates back to July 27, and is the most in the Major Leagues over that same span. Donaldson is a career .303 hitter (10-for-33) with two extra-base hits vs. Porcello.

• This could be a good matchup for Boston outfielder Chris Young to shake out of his recent slump, not to mention his season-long struggle against lefty pitchers. Young has experienced the most success vs. Happ of anyone in the Red Sox's lineup, going 5-for-16 with two homers and five RBIs.

Amazingly this becomes a huge game for the Sox now after the pitiful performance in the Bronx.  They've owned the Jays, they're at home, they've had their hats handed to them, it's a must win to keep from a downward spiral.  The Jays, who I would have counted on to be our cushion to make it to 1st, could now knock us out with a good series.

If Farrell once again puts Pukegaerts and Young in the lineup our chances of winning slide down to about 15-20% because you know Hanley will still be in it and he now sucks badly, and our stupid manager would never or could never think outside the box and give a shot to Sam Travis to get some new blood and life into this moribund team.  As I said back in June, this could really be a shitty team.  And when the $%^& is Betts going to stop feeling sorry for himself and for the fact that Papi is no longer with us by showing some drive, leadership and efen balls.  He bears a major share of our problems by shitting the bed  this whole season.  He owes the team and fans at least one damn good month.

Happ is a good pitcher.  His 2017 numbers are deceiving.  Ahh...what does it matter? Good pitchers, bad ones - the offense is back to "The 5 Hit Wonders."

So Nunez, Beni and Vaz may get hits.  Is Farrell throwing in the towel now?  A little early.  But seriously, Betts, Ramirez, Travis, Bogey, Young and Marrerro - no reason to expect anyone of them to get a hit.

Travis tonight is doing what Sox hitters do. He got 2 hits with no one on base then came up with a runner on 3rd and popped out to rf.

As the Sox automatically lose a big series to the Yankees late, the O's can never beat the Yankees when you need them to, especially in September.  The funny part is it seems that the Yankees and the Sox, neither particularly good, are far better than the Red Sox right now.  It's amazing how we have some of the best pitchers in the league, yet our hitters can't hit a single starter they face.

End of the week in second, maybe out of the wild card by the 15th.  Although they may wait for Tampa Bay and Baltimore to take delight in sealing our fate.

Only chance in this game is that we go wild on their pen and somehow our guys hold them.  Not holding my breath.

You kept asking that question all during 2014 and 2015 just as you're asking now.  You know the answer but if you don't what do these three seasons have in common?  Yes, that's right....Farrell in the dugout----and you will be asking this question in 2018 unless Farrell is fired as soon as possible.

Great!!!!!  Now that moron is pinch hitting for Travis who has two hits......but does he pinch hit for Ramirez, or Pukegaerts, or his pet Young???  What does that tell you about that worthless bastard Farrell?  And that Dave O'Brien; he is the shittiest Red Sox announcer I have ever heard.  He repeats himself and, worse than that, makes some of the most assinine comments that makes a listener roll his eyes while making him sick.

Bogaerts up with a runner on base.  Guess what?  a strikeout.  What a worthless POS.  Why wasn't he pinched hit for.  Now Bradley can't hold up on a swing and taps out.  This @#$%^&? team makes me sick,  the rotten pack of no good losers.

Pathetic doesn't even apply.  There's nothing really "it factor" about this team.  I can't be angry at them because they are essentially overachievers and lucky.  They're not 2011 which had the talent and choked.

If they blow it, it's easy to see why: Sale got them about 10 Ws more than they would have otherwise.  They are a 500 team without Sale.  And that's even if Price was in the rotation all season.

Hopefully, the purge begins with Farrell being the first out the door October 2nd.

Sale is a bargain. Price is a waste of money. Funny how that works.

Take my word for it mark.  It has nothing to do with any bad wrist.  Blowgaerts is simply a rotten choker who is coming apart and regressing at an alarming rate.  His best days are behind him because as I've pointed out for the past three years and you and o thers can now see for yourself, Xander is a total choke artist.  If there is one guy we must replace this off season it is him b ecause he will never be a middle of the order hit ter they proclaimed he would me.  In fact he won't be worth shit to the Red Soxand the sooner we get rid of him the better or we will regret holding onto him in the worst way possible.

I'll believe Farrell is gone when I see it.  Just think, if this organization had any brains we could have had Torey Lovullo running our team now.  Look at what he's done in Arizona, and they pounded the Dodgers in the ground again tonight, four in a row over baseball's best team this year.  The more I think of Lovullo in Arizona the more I hate Farrell with a passion.

I like Lovullo too and wish he were still here, but didn't the Dodgers put a bunch of their starters on the DL and/or bench them so they can rest up before the post-season?

Travis is like the rest of the players on the team. They hit well with no one in scoring position but don't when it counts most. Travis got 2 hits with no one on base but popped out to end the inning with a runner on 3rd. Travis had an opportunity and choked.

Well he's had good teachers to learn from like Ramirez, Bogaerts and now Betts who have been choking all season, and in Bogaerts's case going all the way back to 2014 (remember, 133 with runners in scoring position).  Get Ramirez and Bogaerts out of town in the off season and perhaps Travis will have other people to learn from, the few who can hit when it counts.

You win games these days hitting hr's. We can keep Travis, Betts, JBJ or whomever but if they can't hit hr's you won't win consistently. When the Sox had a nice streak going it was because they were hitting some hr's. It's very hard these days to string together 3, 4, 5 hits to get a couple runs. So unless Travis or anyone else is going to hit 30 or more hr's I don't want to see them. When you have so many starters hitting below .250 your not going to string together a lot of hits. Hr's are very important. Like I said before. Moreland, Benintendi, Nunez & Devers (who cooled off a lot at end of August) were our only real threats in August but that's because we were getting some hr's out of them. Sox had a very good August because of the hr ball.

They screwed up big time by signing Moreland over Encarnación. I understand the thinking (get under the luxury tax) but they could of been creative to do that. Ortiz retiring left a gaping hole in the lineup. They don't really have anyone the other team has to worry to much about in the lineup.
