Title: GAME #131, BOSTON RED SOX AT TORONTO BLUE JAYS
Post by: Bear on August 28, 2017, 04:58:55 AM
RED SOX V BLUE JAYS

MONDAY, AUGUST 28, 2017, 7 PM AT ROGERS CENTRE

TV:  NESN, SNET

BOSTON, (73-57)................................................................................TORONTO, (61-69)

BOSTON:

DREW POMERANZ, LHP, 13-4, 3.18 ERA, 145K

Pomeranz has been a steady presence in the rotation.  He has won a career-high
seven-start decision and tossed six or more innings in seven of his last 10 starts.  He
got a win in his last start vs the Indians, allowing two hits in 5 1/3 innings.

TORONTO:

MARCUS STROMAN, RHP, 11-6, 3.17 ERA, 135K

Stroman continue to chew through innings for the Blue Jays, but the Rays found
success against him last time out.  The right-hander allowed five runs on eight hits over
5 1/3 innings, but is usually a safe bet to bounce back.

Pomeranz, Sox open key set with Bue Jays

Quinn Roberts

The Red Sox begin a pivotal seven-game road trip Monday against a pair of American League East foes, with the first stop coming in Toronto against the Blue Jays for a three-game series.

Left-hander Drew Pomeranz takes the hill for Boston, which heads to New York to face the Yankees over the weekend. Right-hander Marcus Stroman gets the nod Monday for Toronto at Rogers Centre.

Pomeranz (13-4, 3.18 ERA) has been a steady presence in the Red Sox's rotation, winning a career-high seven straight decisions and tossing six or more innings in seven of his past 10 starts.

He allowed just two hits over 5 1/3 innings and struck out nine Wednesday in a win against the Indians.

"[He threw a] fastball up that was getting past our barrel," Indians manager Terry Francona said after the game. "And then, [he had] a very good curveball -- threw it for strikes, threw it for strike-to-ball. He coupled that with the fastball that he kind of rode for the most part up, out over the zone. He really gave us fits."

Meanwhile, Stroman struggled against the Rays on Wednesday, allowing five runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings in a no-decision. Usually an innings eater for the Blue Jays, Stroman has tossed at least six innings in seven of his past 10 starts.

"Balls are flying out these days. Just is what it is," Stroman said after the game. "I didn't make particularly good pitches."

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• Stroman is 4-2 with a 4.47 ERA in nine career starts against the Red Sox. In two starts this season, he's 0-1 with a 4.77 ERA.

• The Red Sox have won 13 of Pomeranz's past 17 starts. He's 10-1 with a 2.48 ERA over that span.

• Pomeranz has allowed two or fewer earned runs in 10 of his 12 road starts.

Do we have them?  This is one of the most unlikable teams I have ever known.  There seems to be nothing cuddly or admirable about them.  They choke from the neck down and there doesn't seem to be much above the neck either.  They need to snap out of it, and, as I've been saying all season, some one must take responsibility and start showing some leadership on that field.

This lineup has close to a 50% at winning.  I wish Bogaerts wasn't hitting fifth because of his miserable choking in the clutch, but maybe  the rest will pick up the slack.  A win today is vital for the team to get off the floor.  They need to show some pride, guts, heart and balls.  The question is, can they achieve it?

Nunez is waving at pitches that are halfway across the opposite batter's box.

Wouldn't be a Sox game without the SP digging an early hole. Sox down 2-0.

What's amazing is that Farrell in his pre-game comments noted that they can't fall behind, they don't have the offense to come from behind.  That's what we've been saying all freaking season!   So of course they come right out and cough up a couple of runs.  Thankfully the Jays gave us a run and now we just got a pop from Nunez - so now let's see if they can hold the Jays from scoring more and possibly score as many as 3 or 4 runs tonight.

This team is as exciting as a school board budget meeting. No wonder they are offering ticket bargains for September. I gave away my tickets for 9/5.

And Farrell asks his coaches "Who's that guy that backs up Leon?"  I'll give Sale his personal catcher in Leon, everyone else gets Vazquez.

Nice of the Jays to cough some up for us. Can the bullpen hold it?

Yanks are down by 4 in the bottom of the 9th, so the Sox could gain back a game here.

Top 8th, seems this game has been dragging.

Angel is up to his old tricks. Very small strike zone for Kimbrel. Still, only two pitches were close to being strikes.

Let's be simple about it.
Morales has a 1 in 4 chance of hitting the ball safely.
Kimbrel has a 4 in 5 chance of getting him out.

And simple works  ;)  Phew....

Vaz again. Hot bat tonight.

Great four hit game for Vazquez tonight so that means that stupid bastard Farrell benches him tomorrow.  Screw these personal catchers.  Leon is not as good as Vaz right now in just about any capacity and Sale hasn't been that sharp his last two games with Sonny catching.  For God's sake Farrell get your damn head out of your ass and go with the best players.  We need every good bat we can get in the lineup especially with Pukegaerts getting the collar again and Hanley looking at potential RBI's as if they were a hot electrical wire, not to mention Betts looking like carpola at the plate as he continues to have a pukey season.   Farrell--what a useless shit

Right markj, a win is a win and we needed it.  Having said that, let's face it.....this was a reprieve of sorts and little else.  One game is only a start and doesn't make up for the rotten play of the previous four games, and as it was we scraped through tonight.  Good  the Indians beat the Yankees to give a one game leg up after squandering three games previously, but this team is in need of getting their shit together and try to play some decent baseball.  I  had doubts about this team all season and now I have more of that doubt than ever.  What they need to do is bow their necks and show that I am wrong about  about them because right now I think I have this team pretty well squared at the present time.  But a win is better than a loss anytime.

This was a nice win that had all the intentions of going south real quick.  Pomeranz had little tonight, but good pitchers find a way of keeping you in the game when they have little in the tank.

Strike zone was pretty small at least for Sox pitchers.  There were a few calls, for Pom and for Kimbrel that could have gone either way.

It sure would be nice if the Sox could put up some runs and turn games when they give up only 3 runs into laughers.

Does Farrell remember they have Rajai Davis instead of playing Holt and Young?
