Title: GAME #128, BALTIMORE ORIOLES AT BOSTON RED SOX
Post by: Bear on August 25, 2017, 01:37:53 AM
ORIOLES V RED SOX

FRIDAY, AUGUST 25, 2017, 7 PM AT FENWAY PARK

TV:  NESN, MASN

ORIOLES, ( 62-65)..............................................................................BOSTON, (73-54)

BALTIMORE:

JEREMY HELLICKSON, RHP, 7-7, 5.00 ERA, 83K

After logging consecutive quality starts in his first two Oriole outings,
Hellickson followed with two shaky starts allowing a combined 13 runs in
his last 9 2/3 innings.  Last time out, he gave up a season-high five home
runs to the Angels.

BOSTON:

RICK PORCELLO, RHP, 8-14, 4.48 ERA, 149K

The right-hander has won his past four starts and is starting to look
more like the pitcher who won the Al Cy Young Award last year than the
one who struggled he first three month of 2017.  Against the Orioles this
year, Porcello is 0-2 with a 3.75 ERA.

Hellickson looks to slow hot Porcello, Red Sox

Mandy Bell

When the Red Sox and Orioles renew their American League East rivalry Friday for the start of a three-game series at Fenway Park, it will also be the first Players Weekend series for both teams.

"Obviously it's something that's different. It's cool to get further background on the individual [player]," Orioles outfielder Adam Jones (aka "Pappo") said of the jerseys. "People are going to have nicknames, patches, people they are representing that have helped push them in their career. I think it's beneficial to see what drives the individual, not just the game, but individuals that drive us to do what we do as people and baseball players."

The first-place Red Sox lead the AL East by 4 1/2 games. The O's are 11 games back, but are still in contention for one of the AL Wild Card spots.

Rick Porcello will get the ball for the Red Sox in the opener. Porcello (8-14, 4.48 ERA) -- who will be wearing "Veintidos," which represents his jersey number, 22, as his nickname on his jersey -- will be looking to record his fifth consecutive win.

After a four-start skid from July 8-18 that was mostly due to a lack of run support, Porcello has won his past four starts, dropping his season ERA from 4.70 to 4.48 and striking out 23 through those 24 1/3 innings.

"When a pitcher gets a win next to his name, there's a relaxation that takes over, an added confidence that grows," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "And it's shown how he's come out of the bullpen early on, and I thought has had very good command of his two-seamer in particular and particularly to his glove side, that's the pitch that locked him in last year for such a long period of time."

Picking up his fifth consecutive win won't come easy as Porcello has not always found success against the Orioles. The righty is 4-10 with a 4.75 ERA in 17 career starts against Baltimore and has allowed 17 home runs to the O's, which is the third highest of any opposing team he's faced.

The Orioles will send Jeremy Hellickson -- who will be sporting a shortened version of his last name, "Helly," on the back of his jersey -- to the mound on Friday. The righty is looking for his second win in an O's uniform and hoping to get back into the rhythm he had in his first two starts with Baltimore. In his two most recent outings, Hellickson has allowed 13 runs in 9 2/3 innings.

Friday will be Hellickson's first start in Boston since 2014. The right-hander has posted a 5.09 ERA in eight appearances (seven starts) at Fenway Park, holding Red Sox hitters to a .272 average.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• A red-hot Manny Machado (aka "Mr. Miami") has found success against Porcello in his career, hitting .303 (10-for-33) with two home runs and four RBIs.

• Although the Red Sox have not had much experience against Hellickson, Mookie Betts is 5-for-5 against the right-hander, while Mitch Moreland (aka "2-Bags") is batting .500 (4-for-8) with a home run and three walks.

• Two of the five home runs Hellickson allowed in his last start came on changeups, bringing his season total to an MLB-high 11. Only two other pitchers this year have allowed 10 or more homers on changeups, while Hellickson himself surrendered just three in 2016.

Bogaerts batting fifth?????? A prime RBI position?  This is very dangerous.  He needs to finally get the apple out of this throat and start contributing with some key RBI's when we need then, especially with Betts and Bradley out.

Well Xander did hit a two run homer in the second  to give us a smell of a chance before Porcello completely unraveled soon thereafter and he has four ribbies in the last two games.  Unfortunately we've lost them both though through no fault of X.  Maybe he may find himself now.  After tonight we could use all the help me can get.

This is a favorable pitching matchup, on paper at least.  The bats need to get to Hellickson early.  And I'll take the gamble that Porcello has turned the corner and is back on track.  Careful in the bandbox that's Camden Yards, though.

Salty looks out of place with that suit. With his hair he should be wearing surfer dude clothes.

Gah, ineptness already. Porcello couldn't throw the ball accurate a mere 30 ft.

Funny how the 1st 2 runs were unearned because of Porcellos own error. They should change the rules and make those earned.

Wow, bad pitching, sloppy defense and poor hitting.  Could be a long night.

Devers needs to get rid of the ball quicker at 3rd. Looks like it's going to be a long night.

This isn't the form we were hoping Porcello would return to.

They may get as many errors as players suspended in yesterday's brawl. Porcello hoping to solidify his league lead in losses.

26 runs in 2 nights.  Wow.  Give credit to Kelly for taking it for the team out of the pen now too.  I get that they had to use a lot of the bullpen last night, but did it really have to take 10 runs before they could wake Farrell from his early innings nap to pull Porcello?  Would have been better off if they yanked him and ran Velazquez out there.

Plus, why does it seem that most the staff now seems to have Leon as their personal catcher while the superior Vazquez sits?

First time they'll have back to back losses in 5 weeks, but they need to snap out of this fast.

I thought maybe that might in the cards too IPOT, but it looks like lady luck was out to lunch and the team with it.  Can't second guess Farrell for this because we took an old fashion whooping tonight and if the Yankees pull out their game in extra innings we're down to 3.5 in the lead and that is getting into the dangerous zone.  What happened to Nunez?  Did he get hurt too?  My God, we're falling like flies----and what is taking Pedroia so long to get back in the lineup?

No more of this personal catcher shit.  Play the hottest hitter behind the plate.  Obvious to me Leon didn't help Porcello at all and Vazques is hitting about 370 at Fenway Park----or doesn't mastermind Farrell know that.

Alonso's HR for the M's was the best thing that happened.  What an unmitigated disaster.  All their nicknames should have read "Clown" on the back.  It was a circus.  2 in a row like that.

Yeah, you gotta take it on the chin every so often, but I'm getting eerie reminders that Porcello will fall to pieces again in the postseason.

I mentioned earlier in the week that this team looks like it's already reverting to 2016 playoff form. And now its sloppy, unfocussed fielding and bad base-running is resulting in costly errors and injuries (Betts, Nunez, Bradley Jr.). Our team is currently undisciplined and looks, at times, confused when it comes to implementing the simplest of baseball skills. In a nutshell, we look tired and spent.

Good news is we have time to recover and right this ship; a whole month in fact. But in order for this to happen we're going to need a skipper whose capable of tapping into the kind of outside-the-box motivators that will keep the attention spans of these millennials razor sharp for another 60 days. I'm not sure we have that in Manager John.

If your second paragraph is your recipe for what we need Muggah we may be in more trouble than anyone knows.  Farrell does nothing to help win games for us; he only does things that often put the team in mortal danger and for some reason Dombrowski and Henry are totally oblivious to this.
