YANKEES V RED SOX
SUNDAY, APRIL 16, 2017, 8 PM FENWAY PARK
TV: ESPN
NEW YORK, (47-42).........................................................................BOSTON, (51-41)
NEW YORK:
MASAHIRO TANAKA, RHP, 7-8, 5.47 ERA, 103K
Tanaka takes the mound for the series' finale in Boston, looking to put
a rough first half behind him. He's pitched in Fenway Park once this season,
and he threw a shutout on April 27 to outduel Chris Sale, maybe his best
start of the year.
BOSTON:
DAVID PRICE, LHP, 7-8, 5.47 ERA, 5 0K
The lefty looks forward to a full second half after missing the first two
months with a left elbow strain. Since joining the Red Sox, Price has had
a tough time against the Yankees, going 1-4 with a 8.31 ERA in six starts.
Tanaka-Price matchup caps doubleheader
Evan Chronis
A rainout three months ago set the stage for a marathon of baseball between the Yankees and Red Sox on Sunday.
The rivals are finishing up their weekend series at Fenway Park with a day-night doubleheader that has heavy implications for an ever-tightening American League East race. New York took the matinee opener, 3-0, behind a strong performance from CC Sabathia.
Red Sox lefty David Price (4-2, 3.91 ERA) will be given the ball in the nightcap. Price found himself on somewhat of a roll before the All-Star break, allowing two earned runs over his last 15 innings while putting together four straight quality starts.
After a rocky first half, Masahiro Tanaka will look to rebound with a successful opening start to the second half. Tanaka put together a torrid streak of six straight losses before entering the break with two wins in three starts.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME
• A return to Fenway Park could be the best thing for a struggling Tanaka. He produced his best start of the year in his last visit to Boston, allowing three hits in a shutout performance on April 27.
• Price is more familiar with the Yankees than he is with any other Major League squad. The lefty has faced the Bronx Bombers a career-high 37 times, going 14-11. As a member of the Red Sox, though, Price is 1-4 with an 8.42 ERA in six appearances against the Yanks.
• Red Sox manager John Farrell says that Brock Holt -- activated Sunday -- will start at third base in the nightcap. Holt had been battling with vertigo and had been on a rehab assignment at Triple-A Pawtucket. He has three doubles in 20 career at-bats against Tanaka.

Well we have a chance to win tonight......a slight one but a chance. Keep Choker out of the lineup at all costs. He's a menace in the field as well as at the bat and now we see that his swings are almost like he is trying to push the ball instead of hammering away at it. What's that all about?
As for tonight's game, Tanaka pitched his best game of the season against us back in April, a three hit shutout, and with us barely getting runners in scoring position he could do it again. Meanwhile, Price needs to pitch better against the Yanks. Some of those batters have feasted on him the last year and a half. If we want to win tonight, a dire hope at present, he must be in control and the hitters must wake up. Choker isn't in it so we do have a chance of sorts.
I don't expect too much out of tonite's game.....more of the same.
Maybe we should call up Triple-A iono
In some ol' school Jacobin way (as some remember that from the old boards ;)), I kind of wish they keep the shutout, LOBster, RISP streak going tonight to get the FO thinking that there IS a problem here with the bats.
Can't they just have Ortiz disguise himself as one of the call ups from AAA? Just put on a new number. Maybe the umps won't notice. He could wear a fake beard, I dunno iono
Gians interested in reuniting with Panda. Yup, that's what I just read. Posted article. iono

That is a W O W ...... So typical coming from the far left coast !!!
Tonight is the biggest start of Prices short career.Big 2 game swing in the standings.
The value of this series with the NYY is that it has exposed the Sox as a flawed team, which we all knew, but management seems to be slow to the trigger.
Letting Shaw go, and hoping that Panda would resurrect his career was one of the biggest mistakes this pre-season.
This series will prompt the Sox to land an established hitter in the 3B slot, and hopefully prompt the Sox to add a least one bullpen arm, and possibly another starter (though the latter is probably wishful thinking).
Nice jog, Hanley. slap sigh
Looks like the good Tanaka is pitching tonight - CRAP!
Wow, runs. Amazing.
Man, this team is in love with grounding into double plays. sigh iono
Wow, 2-54 with RISP. Now that is something to hang your hat on. ::)
Well now 3-55, so that's a step in the right direction.
Hanley and JBJ let him off the hook. Could of been a big inning.
Does Price come out for the 8th inning? Has 96 pitches. Didn't look sharp in the 7th. Barnes was warming up. Big guns coming up for the Yanks in the 8th. I stay with Price and hope he can suck it up for 1 more inning.
Amazing catch by JBJ. Preserves the shutout.

Was a great catch. Kimbrel time coming up with a cushion this time.
Augh!! Kimbrel the Drama Queen. Tying run at the plate now.
Whew, game over. Yankees shut out for the first time this season. Unlike the Sox. At least they split the series. Price was on and they got just enough offense finally.
I'm happy with a split. That's all I was counting on before the series. It wasn't pretty but I'll take it. On to Monday. Lets go E-Rod.

Phew!
Mookie Betts 2 run home run.
GLAD to eat crow.
Tanaka actually pitched well tonight
and thankfully Price pitched better.
This may have been Price's best game of the season.

Absolutely!
AND the Sox needed this win.
Save for Jackie's fantastic catch to rob Judge of a booming homer I was half comatose and totally spent tonight. I hardly could force myself to cheer loudly or show any emotion. Saturday and Sunday's first game took all of my energy away, but Price looked like the Price we remember----and we can sure use him in that role. Betts had a big game with three hits and a two run job, but can he sustain it and not devolve into another drought. If so he might spark the team. The only hope I felt tonight for an upset was that Choker was sealed on the bench---and that's where he needs to be for awhile. He has become a minus, not only not hitting but taking his lousy hitting into the field with him. He cost us two runs in the first game and was so putrid on Saturday that he might have been one of the two or three culprits that cost us the game Saturday. Keep his ass on the bench.
This has to be the best game Price EVER pitched against the yankees.
We got a split....maybe we got even more tonite. We may have put
confidence back into these players....I'm hoping.
As for Bradley, I knew he was good, after tonite, he's great.
Time for Dombrowski to make a few changes....we need a big bat.....

Yep. Heads would be spinning like NUTS if we didn't at least get the split. Price has been back to form in his last 6 starts or so. That's a very good thing.
Kimbrel has been flirting with disaster in 3 of his last 4 appearances.
2-2 Split is not what I wanted, but under the circumstances we should be thrilled that we got that !! So, Lin & Austin Maddox are returned to the minors ?? Lin was hitting 298 in 57 at bats with a good glove & strong smarts for the game. Maddox pitched 1 & 2/3 inning yesterday and did well..... In the meantime Fernando Lbad and a few others remain..... iono slap
I think Lin has a future but he needs to play everyday and he wouldn't now that Brock Holt is back. I am sure Lin will be a regular commuter on the Boston Pawucket shuttle until he eventually wins a spot on the 25 man roster one day if he continues to play as well as he did.

B I N G O dat !!! We do have 2 or 3 in the bullpen that are just taking up space... Lets see what D D does before the deadline as the Bullpen continues to handel a lot of work... Our starters are giving us a good 6 to 7 innings a night !!!

...and that left-handed thing.
Nice win and it's great to see Price continue his GREAT cone back.3-1 would be nice but I will take 2-2 anytime knowing it could have been 1-3.

I think at home in a race like this, you have to win 3 but a split certainly is not a disaster and at least the freaking Rays lost. The bigger issue is that our starters let up 5 runs in 4 games and we managed only a split. That's not a good recipe. The need for Frazier grows. They need someone who can hit the big fly.
The real story was Price. That was as good as I've seen him with the Sox. He had location and speed and I loved that he didn't throw a breaking ball the first time through the lineup, saving something for them the next time around.

So, need to make hay with the Jays as the Rays are our enemies and they could catch us over night !! Sort of like our 1980's foreign policy !!!! thumb_u rofl

Well I guess Farrell has a play on his conscience and has installed Pukegaerts back in the lineup---BUT THIRD IN THE ORDER???????? He is no third hitter---he needs to be put down seventh or eighth where he can't hurt the team with his constant choking up when there are men on base. Doesn't Farrell have enough brains to see that he is a waste batting third. He is nO middle of the order hitter and never will be.
