BOSTON, (86-64)...............................................................................BALTIMORE, (73-78)

BOSTON:

DREW POMERANZ, LHP, 16-5, 3.28 ERA, 166K

Tied with Chris Sale for the team lead with 16 wins, Pomeranz will seek his 17th
victory.  He has thrown quality starts in his past two outings, holding Oakland to
one run over six innings his last time out.

BALTIMORE:

KEVIN GAUSMAN, RHP, 11-10, 4.83 ERA, 158

Gausman pitched seven quality innings and picked up the victory on Wednesday vs the
Blue Jays, allowing one run on six hits and one walk while striking out six.

Pomeranz, Sox continue playoff push vs. O's

As the regular season starts to wind down, Boston isn't looking ahead to the postseason anytime soon.

"Our approach is to win every night," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "That hasn't changed. Nothing has been taken for granted, nothing will be taken for granted. So like I said, right now our focus is to win and put together the best chance that we can to take home a win."

The first-place Red Sox, who play their final seven games at home, continue their final road trip in Baltimore, where the Sox will try to put more distance between themselves and the second-place Yankees. Boston enters Tuesday with a three-game lead in the American League East, while Baltimore is 5 1/2 back of the second AL Wild Card spot.

Boston will send lefty Drew Pomeranz opposite O's righty Kevin Gausman. Pomeranz, with 16 wins, is perhaps the biggest surprise of the season for the Red Sox. He is a likely candidate to start Game 2 in a postseason series.

"He's started to put himself in a very small group around the American League just by -- you look at the hits allowed, you look at the runs given up, the quality starts, the run of games he's been on for the better part of three months or more," Farrell said. "He's been maybe our most consistent starter in our rotation for the better part of these three or four months."

Gausman pitched seven quality innings and picked up the victory Wednesday over the Blue Jays, allowing one run on six hits and one walk while striking out six.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• Pomeranz has quality starts in his past two outings, holding Oakland to one run over six innings his last time out.

• Baltimore leads the season series, 10-7.

• Boston entered the series with a .579 winning percentage at Camden Yards, which is the highest among all AL teams (including Baltimore) since the park opened in 1992.

Anyone hear how long Dustin Pedroia is going to be out of action......this time?  Or when Nunez will be back for us?

They have Nunez scheduled to practice base running at Camden tomorrow.  I guess that's the big test.  We really need his bat, but his energy and ethic even more so. He leads by example.

We need to win. I just don't see the Twinkies beating the NYY; they never seem to do.
