Title: GAME #151, BOSTON RED SOX AT BALTIMORE ORIOLES
Post by: Bear on September 19, 2017, 03:00:46 AM
RED SOX V ORIOLES

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2017, 7 PM AT ORIOLE PARK

TV:  NESN, MASN

BOSTON, (86-64)...............................................................................BALTIMORE, (73-78)

BOSTON:

DREW POMERANZ, LHP, 16-5, 3.28 ERA, 166K

Tied with Chris Sale for the team lead with 16 wins, Pomeranz will seek his 17th
victory.  He has thrown quality starts in his past two outings, holding Oakland to
one run over six innings his last time out.

BALTIMORE:

KEVIN GAUSMAN, RHP, 11-10, 4.83 ERA, 158

Gausman pitched seven quality innings and picked up the victory on Wednesday vs the
Blue Jays, allowing one run on six hits and one walk while striking out six.

Pomeranz, Sox continue playoff push vs. O's

Brittany Ghiroli

As the regular season starts to wind down, Boston isn't looking ahead to the postseason anytime soon.

"Our approach is to win every night," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "That hasn't changed. Nothing has been taken for granted, nothing will be taken for granted. So like I said, right now our focus is to win and put together the best chance that we can to take home a win."

The first-place Red Sox, who play their final seven games at home, continue their final road trip in Baltimore, where the Sox will try to put more distance between themselves and the second-place Yankees. Boston enters Tuesday with a three-game lead in the American League East, while Baltimore is 5 1/2 back of the second AL Wild Card spot.

Boston will send lefty Drew Pomeranz opposite O's righty Kevin Gausman. Pomeranz, with 16 wins, is perhaps the biggest surprise of the season for the Red Sox. He is a likely candidate to start Game 2 in a postseason series.

"He's started to put himself in a very small group around the American League just by -- you look at the hits allowed, you look at the runs given up, the quality starts, the run of games he's been on for the better part of three months or more," Farrell said. "He's been maybe our most consistent starter in our rotation for the better part of these three or four months."

Gausman pitched seven quality innings and picked up the victory Wednesday over the Blue Jays, allowing one run on six hits and one walk while striking out six.

THREE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THIS GAME

• Pomeranz has quality starts in his past two outings, holding Oakland to one run over six innings his last time out.

• Baltimore leads the season series, 10-7.

• Boston entered the series with a .579 winning percentage at Camden Yards, which is the highest among all AL teams (including Baltimore) since the park opened in 1992.

Anyone hear how long Dustin Pedroia is going to be out of action......this time?  Or when Nunez will be back for us?

They have Nunez scheduled to practice base running at Camden tomorrow.  I guess that's the big test.  We really need his bat, but his energy and ethic even more so. He leads by example.

We need to win. I just don't see the Twinkies beating the NYY; they never seem to do.

Quick 1-2-3 OUTS for the Sox in the top of the first inning.
HOPE that the Sox can figure out Gausman.

Don't understand why Betts wasn't swinging on the 1st pitch thrown to him. It was right down the middle. Should of been hacking at it.

NYY win in the 5th 3-2.  So, we can at worst be 2 games ahead.

Gausman is the greatest pitcher I have ever seen.  Mowing throw our AAA superstars.

Sox get a gift run. Again, they need the other team to make a mistake so they can score. They need more runs. Meatball Matt will never hold a one run lead.

You cannot be serious. Game should be over. Devers and Moreland team up to blow a simple play.

1 - 0 on a wild pitch in the 11th inning.

Kudos to Barnes.

THIS team finds ways to win.

Pomeranz pitched a gem . . .
just no run support.
NO matter - Sox WIN!

Devers throw is what happens when you try to be careful. Need to just come up and throw it. Barnes with the save (pitched very well). Kelly with the win. Great overall pitching again. And 2 great plays by JBJ and Benintendi to keep the score at zero. On to Wednesday.

mark, if you're stomach was churning a mile a second just understand that you are or were in good company.  I'm still trying to decompress.  Gausmann is a decent pitcher but waiting until the fifth for our first hit was a little tough on all of us tonight, but those extra inning games are unbelievable.  We just seem to find a win to get the tally or tallies needed to win, but truth be told when the meatball went in here in the 11th I had the shakes worse than ever but the guy did it.  I think the team now knows that they must win every game they play or as many as they can and the fact is  the Twins crap all over the field when they play the Yankees and have done that little dance for the last dozen years they've played them.  Another good win though, and this time I will the first to say I'LL TAKE IT!!!!!!!

I also can't remiss about the bottom of the 11th and owe Barnes a tip of my cap.  I've been on his case all season and he was put to an acid test to hold our 1-0 lead.  All he did was get two tough hitters in Machado and Schoop on infield popups and after that pathetic defensive lapse by Devers-Moreland (take your pick) was able to get Mancini on a comebacker.  The meatball came through.

I think it had better be the best Chris Sale we can send out there because in the afternoon the Yankees play their patsies again and if it goes at is usually does between New York and the pathetic Twins, we will have to find a way to turn a hat trick on the Orioles to keep our three game lead. Minnesota in my opinion has about a 2% chance of winning tomorrow's matinee so we better find a way to win that game tomorrow evening if we want to stay three games up on the Yanks.

Once again the Sox offense pounds out a run!  Fortunately it was all they needed.  I kept waiting for Barnes to give up a bomb, and after the Devers error it sure had a bad feeling for a few minutes.

They're not going to make this easy down the stretch, are they?  sigh

It's only proper that we win it 1-0 and no one gets the RBI  8)

But great work by Barnes to shut it down.  Credit is due for all our pitchers in this game.
